Question on Antenna wire
« on: April 30, 2009, 02:29:27 am »

I have install my antenna wire on my Aziz on the Port side funnel I am not sure if I really like there, only because it is a bit of a trouble some to put it thou the funnel" after I remove and put the superstructure back in it's place.
I am just looking for better spot" where I do not have remove the wire at all.
Any suggestion would be helpfully and Thank you..

Hi there

Given that you're using either 27MHz or 40MHz then the simplest answerr may be to install the aerial wire permanently in the superstructure/funnel and put a plug and socket connection near the RX so that you can disconnect it easily.  A simple banana or mini-coax plug and socket (using the inner connector only) won't affect the aerial length significantly.

NB don't try this with 2.4GHz equipment!

All mine run round the top of the hull.

In my Hellcat, I run it to the top of the mast then to the smoke generator at the transom, makes it look like it's supposed to be there, is there anywhere like this you can put it?

Or alternatively as DickyD says, you can run it around the inside of the bulwarks quite happily

It all depends on the range over which you intend to run your boat. Most radio at 27-40 mHz will function perfectly well with the earial run in the hull (away from the motor) even though it is not fully extended. This pplies if yourboat is not intended to be sailed hundreds of yards away and most are not. They are usually several yards away but not distant and the signal over these limited boating pool ranges is sufficiently strong that you won't lose it. It's worth trying out on dry land and giving the boat a range check with the motor and servos operating and the aerial run inside the hull.
As an example of how much abuse you can give modern radio gear, we run our submarines with the aerial limited to half its length, through the centre of a stainless steel ballast tank and run submerged. We don't experience problems in our average boating lake and I have control over the sub at distances of 200ft! I haven't tried to make it run out of range by going further but I think thats pretty impressive for 40mHz gear. Your surface boat should fare even better, but do carry out max range checks on dry land first.

All mine run round the top of the hull.

Mine, too, around the top, or near the top, of the hull, usually in an aeroplane "snake" outer. In my experience, GRP or wooden hulls are no impediment to radio signals over the distances that model boats are likely to be operated.

The photos shows the blue "snake" outer in the hull of my Billing Nordkap, while under construction. Using this method keeps the aerial straight, and out of the way of any other equipment.

Thank you all" I like every one's Ida on the Antenna wire and I will go with it running the Antenna inside of the hull.
And I do like coax plug as well but the problem I have with that is, I have a little DC motor in the funnel so I do not think I would have enough room in there for the plug.
Again many thanks to all my fellow boat builders on this question. Thank you Brian..  :-))
