Making ply look like mahogany
« on: August 05, 2009, 04:59:34 pm »

A couple of years ago I got an old Billings Jylland kit from Ebay. now in between boats I thought I would give it a try.
The mahogany is incredibly brittle, so I am replacing much of it with fine birch ply, but thats what it looks like of course, any thoughts on stain, paint, tea leaves, walnut skins, anything to make it just a bit more mahoganyish.

Just an idea - have you thought about using Mahogany Ply?

Might be easier &, having just done a search, it's available in 1.5mm x 3 ply.

(Assuming you've not already constructed in in birch)

A cheap solution would be to cover the ply with Fablon sticky backed plastic and seal in on with matt varnish. I used this technique on my Deans marine Medea kit and it worked very well. You can get several different wood effect finishes and I used two to get the effect below.

Thank you gentlemen I shall use both, I have just ordered some mahogany ply for parts not yet made, and the Fablon for the parts that really have already taken ages to make
