What flag to fly?
« on: May 04, 2009, 09:23:05 pm »

Just wondering what the score is with flags, just seen a picture of the tug 'Dutch Partner' lying the red ensign and the Dutch national flag. Would that be because she is Dutch registered but in British waters? What are the rules for flags please?

Thanks.

A general rule is that the flag hoist that courtesy ensign which the ship would use as ensign if it was registered in the country in question. So, a merchant ship, yachts etc. should use the civil ensign, while naval ships should use naval ensign. So it would depend where the flags were flown from, if starboard hoist at mast it would be the country your visiting.

Now wait for the experts to discuss  :-)) :-))

Courtesy "ensign"? The flying of such a flag is regretably becoming more prevalent....but it is still wrong. The courtesy flag should be the national flag of the Nation being visited. Therefore a foreign vessel visiting a British port should fly the Union Flag. The Red Ensign is only to be flown by British registered merchant ships (similarly for the Blue and White ones). BY.

http://www.sailingissues.com/flags-etiquette.html

When in foreign waters the courtesy ensign, often the national flag of that country, is hoisted under the starboard spreader of the most forward mast. On a mastless powerboat, the courtesy flag replaces any flag that is normally flown at the bow.
Like the national flags or ensigns, the courtesy flag is hoisted at 08:00 local time and lowered at sunset. Yet, when manoeuvring - for example entering or leaving port - the national flags should be flown even at night until your ship is out of sight or safely at dock.

this is a good thread..
I was always taught that the country your visiting ..that flag be prevalent ..or on the hishest mast of the ship ...below it the flag of the contry that the ship originates from..either directly below ..or on a lower mast..
