IPhone - Wind Meter
« on: May 05, 2009, 11:53:39 am »

Via email to Mayhem...

I thought you might be interested in this, it is going over big with the
big boats too and the RC Flyers.

I was sort of stuck as to where to send this.

I thought you may be interested in a new iPhone application that we
recently launched that detects the wind speed using the iPhone
microphone. It’s called “Wind Meter”. We’ve gotten such good reviews of
its function, that we felt you may find it useful for your readership
and members. It’s really blown us away that it’s been in the top 5 paid
downloaded weather applications for 3 weeks now!

The concept for "Wind Meter" came from a group of Silicon Valley
entrepreneurs that happen to love wind sports. The idea for converting
the decibel reading from the wind “noise” on the mic to a velocity
reading almost seemed obvious after-the-fact, and we were a little
surprised we were the first to release something like this on the
market. After a considerable amount of R&D, Wind Meter is a really fun
gadget that actually works.

Here is some of the feedback we’ve gotten so far:

· "Was at Seaside on the weekend and a guy had the app. We put it up
next to a wind meter and was only off from the wind meter by 1 mph. -
pretty impressed"

o ref: forums. ikitesurf

· "Works real cool; pretty accurate side by side with other handheld
meters, seems to have better averaging as compared to skywatch"

o ref: forums. iwindsurf

· "Thanks for the info. I got the app a few days ago and showed it off
at our windsurfing event this last weekend. Several people thought it
was very cool
and were amazed by it."

o ref : North Texas Wind Riders

· "We were really jazzed to see this new wind meter app for the iPhone
and downloaded it right away. It is really cool and will be appreciated
by sailors everywhere”

o ref: Blue Water Sailing Magazine:

o www.bwsailing.com

o www.cruisingcompass.com

· KiteLife Magazine has stated: "In our own field tests here at
Kitelife, we found that in a relatively consistent wind speed of 3-28
mph, the Wind Meter app was surprisingly accurate."

A complete description and video of the application in use can be found
at http://www.windapp.com. “Wind Meter” can be obtained at Apple iTunes
APP store by searching for “Wind Meter”.

If there is any more information that we can provide for you, please let
us know.

Thanks for your time and attention,
Bob Diller

We still rely on the old school method here in Hangzhou which also gives us wind direction.  :-))

That's really neat, so all I have to do is install the the "app" on
an Iphone and I have a cheap wind meter.  :-))

Wait, How much is an Iphone, I don't have one...  %)

It could only be a man who can tell the speed of wind from the sound it makes...

I can tell by our chimmney, if the scary pidgeon is sitting on the pot cooing down it, it's flat calm. If it whistles theres some wind. If it howls theres a lot of wind. If it falls off and smashes on the patio again then it's very windy...

Maybe the pigeon should find a safer place to perch. A howling pigeon smashing into the patio ? {:-{
