German WWII Life Raft colour
« on: April 27, 2009, 07:01:02 pm »

I am building a German Navick type destroyer 1936A Mob which has 24 square life rafts attached. These were standard equipment on various warship types so perhaps someone out there knows what colour they should be? All my photos are black and white. I have seen one photo of  a recent model destroyer with the rafts a yellow/light brown colour which looks a bit odd but the model was by a well known German modeller Markus van Beek so perhaps he would be in a position to know?

It depends what period / date you are building to! If similar to Allied navies, during hostilities the boats, rafts, life rings and all would be the same and the upperworks an overall grey or camouflage. After the war rafts became high visability in case of rescue.

Marx floats were painted a darkish yellow colour on captial ships but this was not always universal! As for smaller units, some models of E-Boats have their floats painted green!!! As for destroyers, well you can stare at B/W photos till your eyes go sore but its just not clear. It may be easier and even correct just to paint them the same colour as the ships upperworks.
