Being Canadian I have to go with Randy Bachmann of the Guess Who, Bachmann-Turner Over Drive and recently, Bachmann - Cummings. Bachmann has gone into jazz work now and has produced some good stuff in that area.
If you're old enough, how about Les Paul of the fifties. He set the ground work for playing techniques with the electric guitar.

I kinda still love Gary Moore's guitar playing.

In that case, get ready to turn on, tune up and take off (you might wanna jack up the volume all the way)......

I used to have a similar Les Paul '73 goldtop... until it got stolen.
Man, was I gutted.

To me there are technically amazing guitarists who can turn the strings inside out but it doesn't end up making a noise that appeals to me.  Most guitar fans would put Jimi hendrix high up the list be he does nothing for me.

To me the best guitarists are those who can get some real feeling into it and make noises that almost bring tears to your eyes.  One of the most memorable tracks for this is the Bryan May solo in Queen's "Who wants to live forever".  That really hits the spot for me and, if I had to choose,  probably Bryan May would be my favourite guitarist.

Hy Guys
For guitar playing with real feeling, and technical ability, check out   "Roy Buchanan" ,, Eric Clapton said he was the best unknown guitarist in the world. He played with all the greats from Hendrix to Beck and Clapton. He sadly killed himself while in prison for drink and drugs. His instrumental version of Don Gibson's ,Sweet Dreams is inspiring.
