It is probable that being the right size, shape and colour on the outside is no guarantee that they have the same bits on the inside - also, there may well be differences in quality control depending on their destination.  The far east has for many years had a reputation for a relaxed attitude to things like brand names, as well, so the fleabay ones might have a totally different source.

Stick a bulb on the blue esc output and measure the voltage across it.
If you get one that starts off like the clappers then there might be a use for it : 555 on 12 volts.
