Model DAMEN STAN TUG 1906 in 1/24 Scale...
« on: October 09, 2006, 04:53:18 pm »

Hi Guys...This part of the Forum is a bit quiet just now, So I thought i would post a couple of pictures of my Model Damen Stan Tug 1906 in 1/24 Scale...
I took this tug to the National Tug Towing Finals recently at Ellesmere Port & it attracted a fair bit of interest from the other Tug Skippers...
It is called "STANFORCE" as it has been built as a Stan Tug on a "WYEFORCE" hull...
It has twin independantly controlled GRAUPNER 720 TORQUE  motors...GRAUPNER Bow Thruster...
Working Towing Winch...& I am planning on fitting a Gog Winch next...
It is pictured here towing one of a pair of 1/24 Scale 100 foot x 30 foot Flat Top Barges at Largs Model Boat Club...
I Hope You Like Them...

Have to get photographing, my barges aren't as nice as that one, but they tow OK. I like the Stantug Norrie.

Hi Ron....
The 1906 bit is the Damen Number 19m Long and 6m Beam...

The Barge is one of a matching pair that I built for this tug...This one is called "JAYFORCE" after my Largs M.B.C. mate James MacLean & the other one is called "NORFORCE" after myself...
I have just acquired a large Fully Working Crawler Crane to put on the other barge...I will; put it on the other barge when I can get it back off my 6 year old son Johnny who has been playing with it since I took it out of the box...
The Picture Below is of Clyde Marines Damen Stan Tug 1906 "BATTLER" which my tug is based on...
The other picture is of Williams Shippings Damen Stan Tug 1906 "WILLPOWER"

Heres a few of my Nangee and my barge, I now have two of these barges, its easier for car transport, I lash them together at the lake side to make a decent sized tow.

Nice looking tug, Norrie

I'm not familiar with the Graupner drive units - are they geared ones? I have a  Wyeforce kit staring at me (actually my two cats are eying up the hull!) that I've been debating what units to put into it. Perhaps these if I can locate them.

    ...Hi Mike...

The main problem I found with the WYEFORCE model was that it was a bit too high with the    2 storey deckhouse & caught too much wind when positioning or towing.
Thats why i decided to build a DAMEN STAN TUG from the hull as it is not as high...

This way it makes a perfect boat for tug-towing ...

Another big reason is that i am a big fan of the DAMEN TUGS...

I though there was a cut down model on the main site, for the same reason Norry, I could be wrong........

I'll have to read through the Damen sites - a glance shows some nice looking tugs!

The Graupner 720 - is this running direct or is there a gearbox or belt drive as well? I found specs for the 720 but no reduction systems. I've been using the Robbe ones but they can be noisy, especially in the larger hulls.

I'm going to have to look at the Wyeforce kit and see what I can change as the lower profile is starting to appeal to me.

Hi Mike...

If you contact Damen through their website & ask for a catalogue, You will find lots of good pictures & ideas for future model projects...
Damen are a modeller freindly company whom I have found very helpful in the past...
I have been thinking about a DAMEN STAN TUG 2608 in 1/32 scale using a WYEFORCE hull...

Mike,

The Graupner 720BB, direct drive for our Wyeforce, brilliant motors !  Try Great Hobbies or Burnaby Hobbies in Canada, alternatively  Harbor Models in the US.

  ...Hi Jackie...
I have 2 Graupner 720 BB Torque Motors in My STANFORCE model which is built on the WYEFORCE hull.

I find the only problem with them is that the motor that has to run backwards does not give anywhere near the same power output as the one that is running forwards...
When I put both throttles "Full Ahead" the boat pulls away very sharply to one side...
If you have a solution to this problem, Could you please pass it on to me...
I will be at Blackpool on Sunday, So I will speak tp you then...

What are you using for speed controllers?

I have had similar problems when using a mixer. I opted for a 4 channel radio and it seemed to solve the problem. I thought it was due to the two motors requiring slightly different voltage to get them both to the same revs (friction in the shafts, etc).

Your thoughts?

regards, Mike

                ...Hi Andy...

I built the Wheelhouse from pictures & the plan of MMM,s 1906 plan in 1/32 scale...

It is just built to my own liking in Semi Scale, Especially for Tug Towing Competitions....

If you are buying a hull from Mobile Marine Models, The plan comes with it...

There are plenty of pictures of Damen 1906,s  available on the net & Damen will help you in any  waythat they can...

Your a gem Norrie, private on its way.
I was in Holyhead a fortnight ago on my ship, and the new 1906 Valiant 'B' from Falmouth was there, but I couldn't get through the damn security gate to get on board, apparently she is on charter to Stena to assist docking in bad weather. We had deadlines to keep to so couldn't stop.
The only trouble with a model of her is she is cutaway on the stern, this model is small enough with out having cutaway bulwarks. And she has two gates one in each side amidships.

Hi Andy,

Valiant B is in Holyhead for a few months - I may be crewing her at some stage!

I hope to have a sunday morning free soon to come down to Cold Knap . . . .

Cheers

Chris,
Hopefully the weather will be better this Sunday, I should be there.
I had read in Maritime Journal that the Valiant B is in Holyhead for a while. Some internal pics would be nice, wheelhouse especially.

Hi Andy,

Won't make it this sunday, maybe the following though. I've only got 1 tug up and running just now, have a model slipway Gry Maritha which s nice to tow.

Valiant B has been joined in the Plantain fleet by DMS Heron - not named MTS Valour. She is currently on passage from Damen's yard to Portsmouth as I understand it. I was offered to join her on her maiden voyage but sadly was moving house last weekend so couldn;t anage to get away :-(

Cheers
Chris

ps - do you know Dan Brown ? I was speaking to him a few months ago, said he was thinking of building a model of Portgarth.
