US Coastguard 45ft RB-M
« on: May 17, 2009, 07:56:17 pm »

May be finished, well sort of, for Wickstead but here is work in progress of the 45ft Response Boat - Medium to 1:12 scale (Approx).

Hull/Deck is ply on ply frame. Upperworks are heavy cardboard and plasticard. Drive is 2 homemade waterjets (which may/may not work/blow apart) with brushless outrunners.
No plans available, so taken from small plan/elevation on USCG site plus loads of photos on line.

It's all untested as yet, so................................

Hello Phil,

Your build is superb. I am sure that it will be as good on the water!

The radar for the boat is specified Furuno 3.5ft (1.06m) type XNA10A on a RSB0070 pedestal. If you Google Furuno radar, there are lots of sites in the USA that sell them and have drawings.

I made mine with balsa wood and plasticard with a servo motor to drive. The speaker is just thin plasticard.

Your red 'bumpers' are amazing. My French is not so good, but it seems that you have built them from balsa?

Good Luck

Hello Phil,

The badges are downloaded from the www.uscg.mil website. You can make the reverse side on your computer.

The motors I am using are 600 Kv Tornado 4250 brushless and I expect to run at 19.2 volts. At the moment I am testing the system at 14.4 volts (12 NiMh) because I have made the jet drives myself and I don't want them to blow up yet!

Hi Trooper,

Sorry, but project abandoned after sea trials and the boat sent to the breakers!

The problem was, I'm sure, my inexperience with the jet drives. They should have worked but they aerated the water too much and there was little or no thrust. I think now after due consideration that the boat did not sit low enough in the water and the jet cavity was not, therefore, fully flooded to start with.

Happy memories but........

Sad indeed.  If anyone is looking for plans for this or the 47 MLB there is a guy in the US that sells them.  www.coastguardmodels.com

I have ordered a set of the 45 and 47, so we will see what transpires.

Aye, I was sad to break it up but.......

You're probably aware of the USCG web site www.uscg.mil

If not, there are many many pics on the site and a separate sub set http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg9/rbm/ with photos and film of the 45ft. unit.
I haven't checked but there used to be a separate site under the name 'RB-M Project' which you could google for further info.

Best of luck to all who try but I would suggest thinking carefully before trying your own jets!
