polo tug unlimited class
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:11:55 am »

Hi guys I dont usually do fast boats but my club is letting us tweak our polo tugs since only a few of us have them. We decided it would be more fun to throw out the rules lol. most of the guys have cheap 540 motors and small 2 blade metal speed props. I was thinking of stepping up to a 740 motor but like I said I dont know much about speed rc so any suggestions on a good motor prop combo I wouldnt mind running 2 battery's and I would like a run time of about 10 min or more. I am also planing on using the proboat speed controller since its already in the boat. thanks for looking guys hopefully I can build something interesting.

Here's a photo of a couple of polotugs and a photo of my ramboat.
I designed these for playing games in 1995 for the St. Louis Admirals Model Boat Club St. Louis, Missouri.
They were designed to use the same motor and prop so all boats would be equal and winning depended on the skipper's skill.

The ram boat is disgned after an actual towboat built by DRAVO back in the 50's called the RAM class.

Hazegry, you can also improve performance by changing the pitch of the prop. Increasing the pitch can also make the motor run hot because it'll be pushing more water.

If you answer these three simple questions i'll help you out as much as i can

I have to say how much do ya want to spend
and how quick do you want to go
and also how much mods are you now allowed to do

motor go a graupner 600BB sp Race you can get them from $25 AUD
you will need a high amp esc but a becent one can be found on ebay for 20 $AUD 110A turborix
but most of all stick with a solid shaft and to use most high end props you will need to get a drive dog and nut to hold it on.

if you use gell cell batteries for ballast keep them in and get a 7.2 or an 8.4 stick pack

props are the hardest thing to organise as so many things can change what it needs best way to go is experiment with cheap plastic props and then go for that one in a brass.

hope i helped you some mate

well I dont want to go crazy on it about 100 for motor and speed control and no limits on mods. I was thinking of cutting a channel and making it somewhat like a tunnel hull. I would like it to be quicker than the others but I am not out for a specific speed I mainly want a fun faster boat and something that will be a surprise. as a reference the guys in my club consider the proboat chriscraft a fast electric we a typically allot of scratch boats poking around nothing wrong with that but we are trying to get some younger involvement in the club.

A faster flat fronted (Springer like) push-boat will end up (just like a Springer at speed) diving under as the bow wave comes up over the fore deck.
