For those of you living a bit further South, she is also expected to be open to the public at Portsmouth 18/19th July. http://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/events/event358.php

The July event could be the equivalent. There are Plymouth Navy Days later in the year.

rem2007, if you go on to the navy's website you can sign up for e-mail newsletters which gives information on navydays, ships touring the seas, ships in for repair, has multimedia, 3-d tours etc, you get one a month

Cool I'll give it a go, trying to get the lad's vision of army life as all glamour and instill the mystique of foreign exotic lands.

She has just anchored in Weymouth bay this afternoon (Wed) at about 1530. A bit far out to take good pictures but I did try a couple. She looks good.. 8)....Smudge

"Looks Good"? I think she looks ridiculous. That huge "mast" will shine like a beacon to any radar. And before you come back at me talking about "stealth" technology, I would ask you what material the "mast" is made of. I'll bet it isn't carbon-fibre. This "stealth" stuff is all well and good on the drawing board, and will work fine when the ship is nice and upright, but ships roll a bit and so sloping surfaces become vertical every now and again. Instead of designing (at vast cost) ships with a 3 or 4* taper it would be just as effective to build everything vertical....or use a radar absorbent material. From my own experience a ship with a radar deflecting surface is more easily identified than an "old fashioned" one simply because of the "roll" period. Work it out for yourself!. BY.

yes Bryan you could be right, it reminds me of the American f117 stealth fighter bombers flying over to us on the way to the gulfwar 1, and one of the pilots comes on the radio to the airfield below saying don't want to alarm you, we are here,  and can we land.
to which the u.k airfield said yeah we know had you on the radar for ages,
don't know if that is true or not,  but stealth aircraft don't fly in the rain,

Back in the day, there was a way of making a WW2 battleship look like a fishing boat and back in the day I am talking 80s/ 90s of making a type 22 look like a rowing boat. The fore mast on the 45 is a composite material.

 Only time will tell.

It is about time we had a cruiser sized ship that can actually fight if they spend the money to arm them???
