pack ice, stop the damage from going up to the bow, or since being in the south seas area the front shape sends the spray well off to the side and not onto the deck i.e. reducing the effect that the Russian convoys experienced - having to remove ice with a sledge hammer - just a thought.

Addendum - wave piercing design, apparently also reduces energy use by up to 20% so that energy saving is used to make her faster with less rocking & slamming etc

Apparently it is deliberately designed to give the Esperanza an exceptionally smooth, stable and energy-efficient ride. Model testing showed that the winged bow eliminated slamming and greatly reduced motions and accelerations detrimental to cargo and passengers. And that this new type of hull saves over 20% of power, fuel consumption and GHG emissions. The winged bow contributes only part of this superior performance, there is also a fancy propulsion system to go with it. We will be seeing more of these as some European ships are being designed with the new style bow.

That took me a minute or two. Once I went back to Aerodecked's photo it was obvious.

Yep slightly different design as the ones on the navimag have adjustable blades and the rudders not connected to the pod  %)

Was the designer short of materials when he did the funnel, it looks like he took a KFC (there are other retailers available) popcorn box and stuck that on the model - the ship builder probably reduced it's weight by just making the framework  :D %)

It definitely isn't a crane... more like a weight / wind force reduction measure.
