The hull is from Sirmar, running gear are the water tight ones, if thats of any help. I haven't got to the stage when fittings have to go on yet. But they will also be from sirmar.
The plans are in 1/96 from Jacobin.

Erm, why do people paint the bottom of the hull in signal red?

I think it might have something to do with barnacles on the underside of the ship, I think they use Red Oxide paint. I may be wrong If I am I'm sure someone will put me wright.

I have decided to change the way the super structure was going to be done because of the overhangs each side of the ship, I am know making them part of the actual deck. I will take some pictures and you will see what i mean. Also having access to the inside was going to be a bit of a tight squeeze so am looking into that at the same time. Progress is a bit slow at the moment as I am making sure all the main structure is done correct.

Hi all,

Not much done at the moment, reworked the super/struc because of the overhangs. and made the smoke stacks out of resin.

Having worked in the Caledon Shipyard in Dundee,in the early 70,s as a paint sprayer,i can confirm that the use of Red Oxide paint, that contained Lead, was used to paint hulls, the reasoning behind this, was that it acted as a rust deterrant and a barnacle deterrant,as it contained high levels of Lead and fungicidal, which apparently barnacles did,t like,The inside of all the boats I worked on also got Red Oxide as the base primer,Then Grey primer, then white Cellulose primer then the top coat, of what ever colour was required,
All of the above paints are now prohibited, under Health & Safety, although you can still get Red Oxide, and the other primers, but they do not contain lead,

They only need one walk a day as when we are in the garden they get more than enough running around playing.

Some great work there Mc D.

Have you thought about soldering the crane up using brass? Would be a little bit finer.

No criticism.....just a suggestion.

Hi Rex,
I have seen many builds showing parts being built from solder and brass, I have never done anything like that before and would not know where to start, I thought i would give it a go in plastic and even though i am pleased with the outcome I feel I can make it better. Where would i get the stuff to do this, If you don't mind pointing me in the right direction.

Most model railway shops sell brass stock in different sizes and sections,
tips on soldering are elsewhere on this forum, and the experts on here can put you right as to methods.

120+ hand cut peices of brass in this mast

but it is strong too!

on my Hermes

First attempt, not too many burns!

Clean brass, good flux, silver bearing solder, and a very hot soldering iron.

oh and more than a little help from Mr. Dremel!

That one bit of kit I would be up SHXX creak without it. (Dremil) One of the first things I got out when I started this build and am very glad that i have one. Its been like having a cyborg hand.
