sail arm servos
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:19:21 am »

Hello, I am building a Thames sailing barge and would welcome any advice or comments on the feasibility of using a sail arm servo. I thought that as the required movement for the mainsail on a sailing barge is not as great as, say. a yacht, then this type of servo would be adequate.Durhambargeman

Much depends on the size of sail, and this depends on the size of the model.
A 2 ft sailing barge should present no problem.  A 4 ft barge, you will need a much bigger servo.
THe throw developed by the arm is dependant on the length of the arm, and the direction that the line is offered to the arm.  The travel at the sail boom is dependant on how far out the line is attached.

No reason not to use a sail arm.

I prefer them as they act much faster.

Because a barge is relatively wide you can use a longer arm if you want more travel or double the line to increas movement.

If it is fairly large scale I could recommend the Hitec 815BB. It is a monster sail arm servo with over 19kg/cm torque.

They are also relativley cheap at under 30 quid.

Thankyou for your advice; I think that I will go with the sail-arm servo. Cheers. Ray
