Renovating 1970's ply hull
« on: October 24, 2006, 09:28:14 pm »

Can anyone tell me the answers to a couple of questions please.

I have just discovered a Freya 36 hull in my loft that was made in the 70's and painted with car cellulose paint. want to do this up and it obviously needs repainting.

Do I have to strip all the paint off if I want to resin before repainting ?

What is the correct resin to use ?

Thanks

I would have thought that the original paint would be pretty inert by now and that you could safely cover with polyester resin. However, as is always the case - test on an inconspicuous area first!

Thanks Colin I was hoping someone would say that.

Any idea on the make of resin or where to get it?

Richard :)

Dicky D why do you want to cover the outside with resin cant you pour resin inside the hull as this would have the same effect as coating the outside,if you are worrying about waterproofing the hull. You could then repaint the outside of eh hull on cellulose as this is still available in aerosols

Stavros, you are the expert. Presumably DickyD could simply spray Halfords acrylics on top of an ancient cellulose finish with no problems? Good suggestion re the inside of the hull.

Yes if he applies the acrylic thinly and does not apply heavy coats, personlay I would be inclined to use a product called PLASTICOAT available from Halfords or B&Q this is a very quick hard wearing enamel with dries in 1 hour and can be masked over for a second colour as soon as it has dried.Believe me it works and gives a rock hard finish.Th only drawback is the colour range it is not very good but has all the basic colours they are expanding the range and inc metallic give them a try I was most impressed with them, good coverage and good gloss retention, very user friendly, one thing I would advise is to wear a mask allways even when using aerosols

Any of the previous ways will work as the paint on the hull would be sufficiently old enough that you can safely cover it with all three methods....

Cant get at the inside of the hull Stavros as the hull formers are basically built round a box which effectively closes off the inside of the hull never to be seen again.

Do you know what resin I need and where to get it.

Thanks Richard :)

Either epoxy or polyester, but the better of the two would be epoxy, as it is not as waxy when dry, makes a better job when painted in my opinion....;

Right then I would personally paint strip all the paint off to leave bare wood, get some tissue cloth and cover with one coat of grp all over rub down with 180 grit and repaint using a primer then followed with top caot.I have done this with a Sea queen(which you can see in last mnths Marine modeler content page and also onwith the Wat Tyler boat club piccis!!!)and achived good results .I must confess to rubbing down teh hull with a sander prior to 180 grit I cheat occasionally!!!!.If yo uare after GRP either go to a motor factors or conatct Glassplies in southport thye do mail order

Being completely ignorant I just had a look at glasplies web site . So much there it confused me.

Is there any chance you telling me exactly what and how much of the cloth and GRP I will need. :-[ :-[

Thanks Richard.
