12 inch Brig
« on: June 11, 2009, 12:48:13 am »

When Martin calls for footy info, I jump.

This sets out to be the build log of a papie-mache square-rigged Footy racing yacht.
So it's right in the mainstream of model boating, and I can gloss over the "insert Tab A in Slot tau"

When I started the idea was a little silly, but since the square rig has moved on (in footys) enormously in the last month this little beauty is more sensible now than it was then!

Summary.
carved plug in blue foam - takes perhaps an hour
(say if anyone wants a how-to)

No finish whatsoever - just sanded with foam-backed finishing sheets
fixed to wood block so it can be held (upside down in the workmate)

Plug wrapped in kitchen film (cling film/saran wrap) - smoothed reasonably well, but not obsessively

3 layers of papie mache applied - torn-up newspaper soaked in dilute emulsion - in this case goldish colour

notice the elegant teardrop shape!
More as it happens
andrew

As always I can be asked to write more and paid to shut up

Right!
A trio of Andrews/Andys - we are quorate and can proceed :}

Looking back I can see I have already fallen into error with selecting the pictures - sorry
Backing up to where I should have been

This is the plug secured in my much-abused Workmate and wrapped with clingfilm

Then three layers of newspaper soaked in emulsion paint - diluted 50/50 with water - the newspaper was torn into strips roughly 12mm wide and 100 long and laid in all directions

The emulsion was gold-flecked stuff for stencilling.  We have a LOT of assorted matchpots so they get pressed into use
Allow to dry for at least a night
as with all papie mache do NOT apply the whole lot in one go.  It has to dry by evaporation, and as the binder/glue dries it becomes waterproof - so the drying can take forever.

another three layers  - this time with orange emulsion (50/50)

Yes, it looks mungy at this stage - this is par for the course.

Allow to dry for a couple of days - then you can sand the outside and get it reasonably smooth and level

As it dries it goes matt and shrinks a little.

BTW - I am told that if well-soaked brown paper is used it shrinks a little and goes rock-hard  - enough to be a stressed skin for white foam aircraft - see Chris Golds who makes 1/4 scale planes with foam and brown paper.

At this stage the hull was fine.  It had a shiny inside finish from the clingfilm, sanded outside and was still a handsome shade of orange.  It then sat for several months while the rest of the world evolved to be ready for the square-rigged footy.

Diversion into square-sail evolution
I had been thinking about low-speed airfoils  - which are often simple shallow arcs with no bottom surface and pondering square rigs for low speeds.
I then discovered Maltese Falcon - the Yacht.  A truly modern square-rigger!
Then I built and tested a single-square-sail footy which has remarkable performance  - and will tack :}

SO BeardFoot was dug out and moved to the fitting-out basin

During the pause I had been slightly disappointed at the "leatheriness" of the hull.  It was not very rigid but perhaps this is how newspaper hulls bonded with emulsion always feel.

While finishing Tmark's balsa footy (Blackwatch) I had a surplus of epoxy finishing resin diluted with alcohol (to penetrate the balsa pores) and rather that waste it (Scottish) I cut up some very light glass cloth (1/2 oz/sq yard) and laminated a couple of layers all over the hull

Now this picture in its right place :}
Getting the glass to lie down was not very easy - so when I had finished I laid a layer of kitchen film (clingfilm) over the wet hull and pressed everything together with my hands until the whole shebang was a smooth a possible.

Left to harden overnight - then post-cured for a day in my post-cure oven

Wunderbar - strong, stiff hull with reasonable finish

I glued in Transom and deck edge supports, and gave the hull a couple of coats of emulsion to seal the interior Papie-mache

The andrew post-cure oven is so hi-tech that you require to be certificated even to read this <*<

Take one cardboard box - for a footy this is an A4 ream-of-paper box
Take one Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) mains resistor heater  (this is an old mosquito-killer of the heated plate type)
Put mosquito device in the bottom of the box.
Make a shelf that allows air to circulate and put hull on shelf about the middle of the box
Put Hull or other thing you wish to cure on shelf
put lid on box  - plug in mosquito killer
Regulate temperature by moving the lid as required :}

If you havn't got a mossie-killer try a low wattage mains lightbulb (nightlight or similar) (Make sure it cannot touch anything)
Or go to RS and get one of their tiny anti-condensation heaters and mount it carefully so it cannot contact anything*
*Don't do this route unless you are able to do this safely

Oooo!

How well does she point?

So while us multi lot are spending ages producing perfect moulds with the most high tech materials, Andy number one is off in his shed making boats from newspaper, cardboard boxes and mosquito killers...

Like it :-))

Can't be, my light is so dim you can't see at all.
That's why I shut myself away and crochet footys out of discarded materials

Looks Great, Andrew!

My topsail schooner thread (bottle boat, thanks AndyT), might give you some ideas for RC squares+f&a in a small boat. Same ideas as my barque, but it works for smaller craft too. The schooner is under-canvased for winds under 5mph, but goes well in 10-20. I needed more keel area than the standard footy, and a bigger rudder too.

Your extra buoyancy forward will be welcome in a run, well designed, my friend.
