Paddleship Waverley visits Bristol Channel
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:25:06 pm »

For those of you interested in the 'Waverley paddle steamer', she has arrived in the Bristol channel for sightseeing tours.

Here is the link to the time and tide tables.

I am taking Saturday's evening 7 o/c cruise to Penarth and back, and will be taking my camera, so look out for some pics.

I would have taken the all day cruise but unfortunately do not have the 'Sea legs'  :embarrassed:

I hear that the finances of the Waverly Trust are once again precarious after a bad trading year in 2008. Gives me mixed feelings; the Waverley has had huge amounts of money poured into her from the HLF and income revenue while other equally (more?) significant vessels are rotting away for lack of cash.  Just not enough money to go round and never will be. Sad.

Just came in for my early bath and checked the Web.

Tonights cruise from Newport has been cancelled.   :((  :((  :((

They are running an evening cruise from Penarth, which is down the coast from the Usk channel and will be going out to the islands in the Bristol Channel instead. (no reason given at the moment).  There are cruises during the next week but the starting point is moving farther from me.

Hi barrie

Thanks for your kind comment. I have been working on her lately and installed the MMB's smoke machine. The major work has been the speeding up of the paddle wheels, as she was running a bit slow at Wicksteed.
This involved changing the drive wheels gearing ratio and relocating the motor for the belt drive. Might be able to go surfing now, with the speed of those things.

She is now holding three lead batteries and hasn't been float tested yet !!   I might live up to my name again if I put her in the water.  ;)

Calm down now   ;)  She goes much better now with a faster gear ratio. The three lead batteries were a mistake. (what a steep learning curve eh) She sits a little low, so I'll be lightening the load a bit to compensate.

Looked great with the smoke effect going across the water, and steerage is improved with speed. Just have to clear the weed from the paddles now it's dried at home.
