RADIO CONTROL - 3 Throttle
« on: October 30, 2006, 11:34:10 am »

Hi all,
My first contact through this forum and I hope someone may be able to help me. I am refitting my 1:24 scale Vosper MTB to fit 3 motors, shafts, props etc instead of the single motor as at present. I have managed to sort out which way the 3 shafts rotate but my query at the moment is to do with controlling the motors. Does anyone know if there is a r/c transmitter system out there which has 3 throttle controls or knows of a simple way to adapt a 'normal' 4 or 6 channel transmitter? I think the Futaba 'Navy' has twin throttle sticks but not three. I can rig all three motors to run off 1 speed controller but I would rather be able to control each motor independently if I can.
Many thanks
Adrian

You may want to check out Barry's page on PIC mixers.

http://www.kleefeld.freeserve.co.uk/model/barry/pic01/rc_mixer.htm

They mix the signal onboard the boat, and he does a mixer ideally suited to your application. Inexpensive too.

Although I have never built a three-shafted model, the solution suggested on Barry's site would seem to be the best - and economical too, at that price!

"A mixer to drive the Outer 2 props with rudder mixing assistance as per my type #806 above...
PLUS:
The Inner 2 (or middle one) being controlled to drive ONLY in a forward direction and then only starting after around 1/2 forward throttle stick movement. Further forward stick movement ramps up this motor(s) faster to reach full speed at the same time as the outer props.
This should give reasonably docile low speed control - But lots of welly at full stick!!"

Adrian,
I seriously doubt if there are any 3-throttle, individually controled, proportional radio systems around.  So, the 'mixing' idea, or just not indipendantly/proportionally controling that third motor is what's usually done.  There are ways of doing it.  They sort of depend on your brain/hand/thumb coordination though.  Knowing how I am when playing with boats, I gave up on that a long time ago - lol. (which just means that I'm lazy!)

Is it not possible to do this on the Robbe F14 Navy ?  This TX is expandable and by installing a proportional slider unit you could connect this channel to one motor ( say the central one) and the two throttle sticks  to the other two motors.

You would need separate controllers for each motor though.

Try the series 2 mixer from JJC Electronis, they advise on thes pages.

Throttle stick operates both engines and the third at higher rpm, reduces inner props at high speed.

Use the rudder stick left and right and she turns left and right on herself.

Well recomended and used on lots of boats.

Dear Adrian
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/Common/Electrics/Images/setupsA4JPG.jpg
Diagram three shows the ACTion mixer with two ESCs but it also has a third output for a central motor which isn't affected by the rudder stick. Read the article which goes with the pictures. Sorry I can't explain it any better but if you connect up as shown and add a third ESC to the central mixer output for the middle motor then you can control three motors from two channels like you want to.
Check with Craig at ACTion if you want any more gen on his stuff. Nice guy. I think Astec's mixer does the same thing. As for trying to control three motors independently from the tranny, I wish you good luck. You'll need it, along with about twelve fingers and thumbs.
Sorry this answer is so long, but it didn't seem to fit a "yes" or "no" reply.
I have two ACTion mixers and they work fine for me. Suit yourself.
