Sub Pirates was locked down because too many people benefiting from free access, and the costs of running the website weren't being met.

There are certainly still items of interest there, but it would be misleading to claim it was as busy as it once was. Submarines have always been, and probably always will be a niche interest. Despite this, there are now quite a few sub orientated forums; about eight last time I looked, which means that things get spread a little thinly.

I would prefer it if things were all on one or two forums, but unfortunately personality conflicts, and business interests often result in the groups splitting and forming rival camps.

Darrin Hathaway built a great OTW S-class and it's documented over at the Sub Committee-

Did they really paint boats that colour?  Serious question I am an ex submariner (diesel boats ) and I know that there were some experimentation with colours and camoflage etc but can't remember a boat painted half and half.  Home fleet boats were always black.

My dad's boat, HMS Sibyl, (S Class) was operating out of Trincomalee (Ceylon) and it was painted Brunswick Green (Hunter Green) and a 'Dirty Brown' underside, according to Stephen Jenner, 1st lieutenant. He told me this himself about four years ago.

It's a big boat, with a high freeboard when surfaced, so I would say ballast volume is going to be in the ball park of about 1.5 litres. I'm sure OTW do a module for this, possibly very similar to the one they do for the Type VII as the boats are of a similar size and both twin screwed.

OTW and Sheerline modules both use water pumps, however although there are differences in the way these systems work. OTW vent the air from the tank into the dry space of the cylinder, and use a positive displacement pump which works in either direction, so the water is pumped in and out.

The Sheerline system pumps water into a sealed ballast tank with a centrifugal water pump, this pressurizes the air inside the ballast tank, to surface a pinch valve is opened and the air pushes the water out, the pump only works one way.

Coming along to the Dive-in at Brockwell Lido on the 10th October? There will be boats present with all these systems, plus Engel boats, scratchbuilt etc.

thank you Andy,

i will certainly try to make it to the dive in, though i will obversely be boatless.  I will have to contact OTW and Sheerline as i will also need to investigate all the moden electronics and i am sure the people at the dive in would have far more knoledge than myself.

If you PM me your email address, I can add you to the Dive-in mailing list, this way you get advance notice plus any updates which don't trend to feature on the forums postings.

I'm about to bring one out next week. It will have everything installed, ESC,servos, seals, Pitch Controller, failsafe, Emergency ballast tank blow, Snort, 8ch Sombra Labs receiver, 2 x 500 motors. Just put in some Lipo batteries and drop it in.  PM me for price and details please. I also have a kit for this if you want to save money and don't mind assembling one.
