Thought I would ask the Oracles!

I am trying to discover what flightdeck lighting was used on Happy H after her Harrier 'nose job'

So far I have drawn a blank!

Not after the approach or 'Meatball' lighting, just that to mark out the runway sections of the deck.

Trips to RN Museum at Pompey and FAAM at Yeovilton haven't borne fruit either...........

Someone must know!

Please tell!

I have a couple of pictures of the Hermes model in the RN Museum but I assume you have already seen that.

Tjhanks for the offer Colin, visited Pompey last year expressly to take photos of that model.........
only problem is.........................it doesn't show the lights!

(They actually had a small scale verion there too.....about 1/144 I guess) and that didn't show them either!

I think you may well find that "on-deck" lights were discontinued well before the Harriers came on the scene. I presume you are talking about the big round jobs that were spring loaded into "tubs" on flight decks. In my memory they were phased out in the early 70s and replaced with 2 sorts of funnelled spotlights. A big advantage of the "spotlights" is that it's easier to play deck hockey without tripping over the slight upwards bulging the earlier ones had. (ie, a flat deck). Joking aside, the spotlight version puts light where and when required, at the intensity required. Big subject. Ask if more info and / or pics are needed. BY.

Thanks Bryan, do I take it then that the deck was effectively 'Floodlit' rather than having 'Runway lights'?

I enclose a pic of the Flight Deck lighting arrangements on RFA "Gold Rover".  Not quite an aircraft carrier, but the lighting units are standardised whatever ship they are fitted to. I'm not sure if the GPI in the form shown (the round thing at very top centre) would be fitted to a carrier, and the horizon bar would take a different form. Cheers. BY.

Hallo guys I have got Hermes plains for around 1982 on from the forklands war including all navigation lighting and wot they are there is a lot of lighting.
They are at 1:96 scale plains the same to the one I am buildind if this is any help to you.

I have photos of my Hemes built for the NMM that will be going on my site soon which cover the lighting on the island . Two types were used if my memory serves me right , a long shielded type and a short type , both of which I had cast in w/m  . We are talking 80's here but I could maybe find the masters and get them into my shop BUT what would be the demand ?

The 'spot lights' are available John, the query is as to whether or not there were additional lights mounted in the 'runway' surface of the flight deck,and at the top of the ramp, as some photo's seem to show, and if so what colours were used where.

Far as I know guys the set for Hermes plains that show all types of navigation lighting on the Hermes are available for the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich at a cost I was lucky and was lent a set and had them copyed at a price I hope this helps you guys out
