What is the smallest tug, that anyone knows of, in the full sized world that is equipped with a proper towing winch?

Pictures please.

Thank you Xtian29. The West Coast of Canada seems to be a mecca for the enthusiast of unusual & small tugs. Two of these are smaller than I would have guessed.

Any other offers or just nice piccies?

Hello

In fact the need of winch is for coastal and high sea tug - The west coast of Canada is special with a large place protected by Vancouver island were it's possible to do coastal towage with small tugs.

Large powerfull harbor tug with high bollard pull are also equiped with winch as they need to trust in the towing line and have some time to reduce it.

So usual small tug with winches are rare... What size are you looking for ?

I am hoping for something Bronc size but all the searches that I have done only refer to much larger tugs & winches. The first of your photos certainly suggests a logging connection & is small but do they get yet smaller & more basic?

The other possibility is something militiary used for goodness knows what.

I am looking to build a freelance model but I want it to be "possible". The smaller the full size prototype that I can find the better as it opens up the type of model that I can build.

Are you interrested with "normal" propeller or also Voith, ASD etc... ?

This one for exemple is quite small but the towing winch is on the forward deck as she's an ASD.

The model would be kort nozzle but that doesn't necessarily mean that the full size needs to be the same.

Ideally I am looking for something that looks less like a scaled down big tug but my primarty interest is to find out the smallest tugs that have such winches fitted - preferably at the back.

The Macduff is certainly the smallest winch equipped tug that I have heard off & proves that they have been fitted to very small tugs. Interesting that it is Scottish.

This is the proof of concept that I need but I would love to see any other small examples out there.

Thank you Longshanks.

Since you have done so well on that challenge, how about modifying to 'steam' and 'winch optional'.  ;D
(hope you don't mind hijack Chris)

In Sweden very small open "tug"boats with towing winches were used in the log towing industry. Complete with spooling gear and everything.

Thank you Martin. This is really interesting. I had absolutely no idea such small boats were equipped with towing winches as a common practice. I had expected the odd one off.

I have a vague memory about some small US Army open tugs of the Vietnam era but I cannot tie it down.

I am very interested to see more.

Please keep them coming.

Bee - I think that what you are asking is sufficiently different that you might be better with a new topic that will attract the eye of those who have information for you.
