Jermu (Dean's Mastif)
« on: July 05, 2009, 02:02:27 pm »

Hi,

starting to build Mastif kit. So far I've prepared the hull, installed propshafts and rudder shafts.

In photo is my plan for setup. Motors will be Graupner Speed 305 Torgues instead of Speed 260.

The GRP hull is very sturdy and impressive at first sight. It has lots of scratches and imperfections - but they are easily filled and sanded. Unfortunately the hull isn't symmetrical  :((

Holes for propshafts are marked in the hull as 30mm long. First I made a 20mm hole, which was obviously too long! (left in the pic). So I had to cover it with scrap plastic and epoxy. I made another hole as 15mm which was pretty good. Also markings for rudder tubes are in wrong place.

There is a skeg drawed in plan, but not moulded in the hull. I made my own from scrap polystyrene sheet and epoxied to the hull.

At this point I really should have stopped reading instructions. But I didn't. I decided to dry fit rear deck and guess what?  It's 5 to 6 mm too narrow and badly shaped in the end. Oversize parts are easy to cut but I had to make new one - scrap plastic is needed again  {:-{

It will only get better, eh? Hope so.

After few problems I have rudders and motors installed. Propshafts were bent (that was even stated in instructions...), could not get them peferctly straight.

At least it floats!

I was more clever with the foredeck. It had to be cut this much oversize to fit  :o

Decks glued in place and joints to bulwarks filled. Tomorrow have to sand them (not my favorite job) and paint the hull.

Added bulwark supports, painted hull, deck and bulwarks with primer. First the ever I airbrushed, wasn't so difficult I thought.

Also started to build superstructure. Parts in printed styrene sheets were mostly fine, only one corner has to be fixed.

Aaargh!  >:-o   What have I done? How this is even possible? There's a crack in propshafts tube!!! Yes, a crack of 3cm. I've had so bad luck with this model, almost ready to discard it.

Very annoying >:-o try running some solder into the crack or sleeving it with some slightly larger brass tube

I also had to discard white metal rudders and tiller arms (which were already installed), they were very soft and easily damaging. I made better ones from brass sheet. Props were changed to little smaller ones from Graupner.  I don't like that I have to replace all the running gear, since this wasn't so cheap kit.

Long time since last post. Our baby boy was born in July and I've been quite busy since then  :D

So back to this unfortunate project. How can you make nice railing from these supplies? Btw, holes in the white metal stanchions are way too large for the brass wire. Once again, I ended to buy spare parts - Billings make nice brass stanchions.

I am watching your build, because I want to build one to (time permitting).

Have you called Deans Marine about your building problems? I have heard and read in other postings that they are extremely helpful when something might seem wrong.
I think I always would contact the manufacturer first, before telling the whole world via the internet how bad it all is. O0

After all, this model sails very well - I think the skeg I made (pic 5)  is important. In these pics she's little front heavy, after shooting pics I removed some ballast. Today's testing in Finnish Model Expo:

Do you think this tiny model really could break ice?

Hi harrin, you have done a great job with this kit The finished article looks well worth the effort. I have built a Dean's kit myself a few years ago  (ST Furie) so can identify with your build  dramas in some ways. I'm happy with my completed model  though as you should be with yours. :-))
