hatch clamps
« on: July 10, 2009, 08:48:14 pm »

I need to fasten down a flat access hatch onto a deck, I will create a seal with silicon sealant squeezed between the deck and hatch, but I need ideas for securing the hatch down to compress the seal and keep water out.

Anyone help?

Thanks

Ian

I dont know if these are any good for you Ian, I have used them on several of my boats and they dont show up too much.

They are made by Robbe and sold by Westbournes.

Hi Ian,

Depending on type of model/scale this might work for you.

RC car guys use dome headed screws with an alan key head instead of pozi or flat. On workboats I have used these with a ring of plastic around, looks like it might be a sounding pipe or perhaps a tank fill point.

Thanks for that fella's. They are for a cheap and cheerful airboat - nothing fancy - just to keep the water out.

Is it freezer sellotape the speed guys use to seal hatches?

Tape is a good option if it can be peeled off and re used so as to allow a battery change without needing miles of tape.

There are some powerfull magnets sold to work as necklace clips.
Or one or more rubber bands from hooks inside the hatch to the keel.
Or a length of thread pulled through a small hole in the hatch and held while glue on it sets.

Agree with the magnet idea - if you have an old CD drive from a PC, they use Neodymium magnets around the laser lens to keep it steady.  Rip it apart and you also get a couple of useful motors and gearsets too!
