Gravenhurst Antique and Classic Boat Show
« on: July 12, 2009, 09:43:43 am »

Jerry Georege (ggeorge) an I went to the Gravenhurst Antique and Classic Boat Show yesterday. This is an annual event that exhibits, the finest in floating furniture in the Muskoka Lakes area. The majority of these lovingly cared for vessels are owned  and piloted by some of the richest and perhaps not so famous people in the Ontario cottage country area.
Most of these boats were built in towns on the Muskoka lakes by such builders as Ditchburn, Greavette, and Duke to name a few. And off lakes builders such as Shepherd, and Peterborough.
The day started damp and many of the faithful hadn't arrived as early as we had. Apparently they didn't want to get the topsides of their mahogany wonders wet and so waited for the weather to clear, which it did. Then the pedestrians and boats started filing in and the day turned out quite well. The RMS Seguin was doing her usual shuttle about for those looking for a quick ride during the vent, so the morning was punctuated by her booming whistle and her comings and goings.
 A good day all round.

One vessel caught Jerry's eye in particular. It reminded him of the Newfy fishing boats of his youth. It was lovingly restored by a gentleman form Port Colborne. The unusual part was its rudder/speed control system. The engine was a two stroke hit and miss type engine with a limited RPM range and the only way of reversing was to stop and restart the engine. A bit doggy when trying to dock. Some ingenious individual came up with the clamshell rudder and speed control system. There is a split clamshell over the prop that can be turned port and starboard for turning or open and closed to give forward and reverse. It worked exceptionally well.  Could we be seeing a model of this little item in a build blog soon?

This vessel was built for Canadian entrepreneur Timothy Eaton. He had a reputation for wanting the fastest boats on the lake. This one was built in 1922 and launched just before his death. The detailing on the vessel is superb.

And here's Jerry contemplating our next club rescue tug. Not quite a TID, but nonetheless and interesting build and even more interesting ride.

John, thanks for that lot, as a somewhat landlocked landlubber I found the boats and the background extremely interesting.   Pete M

Thats what we thought. After looking at the plans web site. I think I'll order a set of plans and see what can be done over the winter.
