1/96th scale Modern RN warship queries.
« on: August 12, 2006, 10:49:51 pm »

Hi all. Any of the forum experts help me out?

First query;
As we all know(!), modern RN warships have their name in red on both flanks near the stern. But, when modelling in 1/96th scale, what's the best way to reproduce these names, special transfer, leteraset, anything else?

Second query;
Also for 1/96th scale. the flight deck at the stern of modern RN ships have a mesh type of netting instead of the usual railings. What's the best method for reproducing this? Alternatively, does anyone know of a manufacturer that produces realistic scale mesh?

TIA

Hi justboatonic
I think Read Plastics ( www.readbusiness.co.uk ) are good for the lettering and JR Haines for the netting
i think that both can be found on the colourful link at the top of this website Westbourne model centre.
if not you will find lots of bits to keep you amused for ages.
cheers

when the missus is out, get a pair of scissors and attack the net curtains. find the bit where the curtains cover the net all the time when drawn and if youre very lucky, she'll never notice. if we dont hear from you, she did.
anotherr safer place to try is white ensign,  I thinks Deans marine and/or  Sirmar may do something.but Haynes is probably the best bet.

Slaters do model railway lettering in seperate plastic letters.
Just paint and stick on the rear quarters.
The full size warships have the letters welded on so are raised, these plastic letters replicate this.
Also the ships have a nameplate with brass letters around the midship position for the brow.
You can mount the gold painted letters on a small piece of stained wood this.

Thanks to all for the info. Ill contact my local model rail shop as they have Slater's accessories in stock and look up the Haines website.

For the netting around the flight deck, try using the aluminium mesh for car body repairs.  It's easy to cut and can be formed around bends if required.

Quite cheap as well, an A4-ish sized sheet cost under £1 from my local garage.

Re mesh, in a garden centre a while ago, I noticed some fine 'mesh' on a large roll used for something to do with gardening! (not my scene but tagged along as always!) - indeed a very fine mesh that I would supect would admirably serve the purpose since it was dark coloured.
