Which Varnish for halfords cans Help!
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:55:24 pm »

Hi All

Right then, there's lots of posts regarding varnishing over the halfords cans but which actually works well without yellowing in time?.I'm about to paint my sons first boat (fibreglass version of hfm pilot boat) and would like to finish it with a good rattle tin varnish and it seems the following apply........

Humbrol varnish works well

Plastikote goes on well but can yellow over time

Could anyone set the record straight for me please ?
many thanks

Hi,

Halfords also sell a satin gloss lacquer- this will always be the best thing for Halfords paints- always try to keep the same make. And the satin does look just right too.

Greg, For all my boats I have used Halfords paint, protected by Humbrol matt varnish, and have had no problems.   Pete M

Hi,

I must apologise, i've searched high and low for the satin and I can't find it anywhere, i'm 100% sure they USED to do it!

Best thing would be to have a look through some of the other posts, i'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere...

I just bought some Plastikote Satin Varnish from B & Q.
( not noticed any yellowing yet over the years I've used it...)

Hi Steve

I use ronseal satin exterior varnish over Halfords paint red black etc.  Over white I use Humbrol satincote. used them both for years no discoloring.

Hi All

I've just sprayed the Meteor which was sprayed with Halfords car sprays with Chestnut Products Acrylic Satin Lacquer, no problems and nice finish.

Great how the dust appears when you spray..unreal

Got it from Axminster Tool Centre  £6.10 for a 400ml spray can
