Comtesse advice
« on: July 24, 2009, 12:29:26 pm »

I received the Robbe Comtesse kit  yesterday and started to clean off all the moulding flash on the hull.
It does not come off  and leave a smooth surface and I do not know what to do about it.

My questions are,
How far can I sand the hull joints before I cause a problem?
Can the moulding marks be filled with something?

I intend to plank the deck with Walnut strips so it's only the lower hull is a problem.

Thanks.

If memory serves, the Comtesse hull is "Plura", (ABS to the rest of us) and quite substantial.
Sand it's flush and fill with something like Milliput Superfine, Humbrol - Model Filler, Squadron / Signal - Modellers Putty White ,
 Tamiya - Basic Type Putty - http://www.modelsforsale.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=89999115

Remember to 'key' the hull before priming!

Thank you, I have to get some wood for the stand so I'll get some at the same time.
I am not impressed with the kit quality, the pressed hull is marked on both sides presumably from the pressing mould and it's poor having the flash joints on the main deck where it's visible. I have wet and dry paper sanded it smooth as I can get so now need the filler.

The kit contents are a bit sparse compared to the Victoria kit. No stand or glues and the plasctic parts are poor. I always seem to make the wrong choice.

I intend to paint the hull first, can I use an ordinary primer that is safe with the plastic, and what paint is safe as a final finish.

I've had both kits and would say the Comtesse is a much better yacht on the water.
The extra bits soon got knocked off my Victoria....

When it comes to sailing, the deck furniture gets in the way and snags the rigging. I have removed several pieces from my Victoria.

It could be that Robbe have worked out how much deck furniture you can have without problems, hence the smaller number of pieces.
The Robbe is the better boat from what I can understand.

I ordered a Hitek HS-765HB sail servo and what came was a Hitek HS-785HB sail winch. The price was the same and it seems the company had the same part number for both items.
Can I use a sail winch on the Comtesse or if not, can I use the sail arm with a winch servo.
I am not confident to rig the sails with a winch.

I do seem to be having a lot of trouble with my first sail yacht build.

I would ask for the supplier to send the appropriate sail arm servo or approriate substitute sail arm servo. Especially if that is what you ordered and ask them to refund return postage.
This is not a suitable substitution.

You cannot put a sail arm onto a drum winch servo.
The HS 765HB Sail arm servo rotates 140 degrees, just under half a turn.
The sail winch provided rotates 3.5 turns.

If I were you I would stick with the original set up of a sail arm. You shoud not have to compromise because of a supply error.
Demand a replacement or your money back, and don't accept any BS.

If they are still unhelpful, and if you used a credit card, tell the supplier you will contact the CC company about stopping the payment, if you are not satisfied. This usually gets them moving.
But remember to be nice.  :}

Thanks for the guidance Tiger, as you suggested it's packed up and ready to go to the post office at 2pm.
They were really helpfull and I suppose because it's more expensive they want it back.

I solved the paint issue the other day and purchased some tins of HYCOTE  Acrylic white primer and gloss. The instructions say it's suitable for rigid plastic surfaces so I'll do a test spray on scrap first.

Well on to the next problem I suppose.

I meant to ask previously, does anyone have a source for lead shot suitable for keel ballast.

Where are you Marion?

If you put your location into your profile people will be able to direct you to a local supplier.

If you are in UK I would suggest you try yellow pages and look for gun suppliers.
People buy lead shot to make up shotgun cartridges. Possibly the cheapest source of supply.

Others on here might be able to suggest a convenient size/grade of shot for pouring into a keel bulb.

One word on the epoxy resin to use. Get 30 min, 1hr or 2hr resin. This gives you plenty of time to manipulate the shot and the resin together.
The 5 minute stuff does not give you enough time before it goes off.

In Cornwall, easiest to go to your local scuba shop, divers use coated shot, sold in kilo pouches,to obtain correct buoyancy.

Well the replacement servo arrived today, the sail arm is massive.  I bought the lead ballast on Ebay and the seller sieved the size down to 3mm and it's perfect. So all that's needed now is the Walnut strip from Cornwall models to start things going.

I don't know whether I asked if anyone has built the Comtesse so I am asking now.

I have found that part 4.8. sliding hatch is too big to fit into either the top deck or part 4.9 Frame.

The instructions appear to say check the hatch fits into the deck recess and sand to fit. It's so big that if I do so then the lip around the base of the hatch will disappear and it still won't fit.
Then 4.9 fits over the hatch to allow it to slide open.

I'm beginning to despair of the quality of the parts and instructions.

If anyone can help I would be gratefull otherwise it's going into the loft to collect dust.

Welcome to modelling.

I often have to sleep on something for a couple of days, but eventually a penny will drop. O0

I sold mine before building it, as I needed the cash for something else, so I'd like to see what I missed out on.

Marion, of course we would be very interested. :-))

Most builds take several months, as for most of us it is a hobby we can only do in a little bit of spare time.
My last ARTR took me about a week. But it took me 6 months to start it.

My last kit took me 8 months. :embarrassed:

My present build? Well let's just say it took me over a year to get started. :embarrassed: :embarrassed:
