My local model shop - in China
« on: July 24, 2009, 03:28:12 pm »

Last time I mentioned the model shop somebody asked for pictures

It is called Golden Wings.
Four friendly helpful staff. You can even buy second hand gear there. My friend (newbie to sailing) got a second hand Futaba attack 2ch with Tx, Rx, battery pack, servo and a wee motor boat thrown in for about £20.

They have a 1:1 WW2 style BMW boxer motorbike in the window, and a reasonable range of the plastic kits, a few RC planes, a couple of boats and lots of helicopters. They also carry paints.

Nothing special, but for me stuck here in China it is a godsend.

Semiretired.

I met my Chinese wife when we were both doing our MBAs. She didn't want to stay in Europe. I left my consultancy job and moved to China.

She is in Banking, and so I don't really need to work, but I teach business English and western culture at a the local university of finance and economics (16 hours per week).

The last time I went into my local rc hobby shop and asked if he can help to recommend a propulsion system for my boat, he gave me a "I am not free. don't bother me" look.
So, this forum is my favourite "hobby shop", at least I get lots of helpful people here.

Last time I went to my local hobby shop the chap was on the phone for 10-15 minutes and showed no interest in my custom, so I left. {-) I just buy on line now, quicker, more reliable and friendlier, Hi Malcom! :-))

Thats a decent shop compared to what we left behind in Shanghai.   :-))

I note you called this your local "model" & not hobby shop.  You should post some photos of your local electronic, hardware, or building material market where we find most of our real hobby needs.  I still can't get over that I pay only 2 quai (US$0.28) for CA adhesive compared to what I used to pay in the States.

The decorators market here is an an area over 3km long.
I have yet to find the electronic trade market, or the Auto wholesale market, or the plumbing market.

On your next visit, I'll take you to Great Wall Motor Market where you can find almost everything needed for scratch building.  Granted, its not like Shanghai's Beijing Road, but I've been told its where known local model boat manufacturer goes for their material needs.

Hi all, I was in Hong Kong for a couple of days in Oct 07 and eventually found the model shops about 4 or 5 all in the same street!, and found the prices about the same as in the U.K. I was most disappointed.

CA glue is 4 reasonable size tubes for £1 in our "Poundshop".
