I was wondering if anyone could identify this Caterpillar we found in my son's garden. Thanks for looking Alan :o
The mobile phone is for a comparison of size (approx 2 1/2 inches)

I'm pretty sure  that's the caterpillar of the Puss Moth, Dicky...

Sorry Rich I reckon its a Privet Hawk Moth caterpillar.

Yup I agree with that identification.   Confirmed by the fact that the leaves in the pic, presumably the food plant, are privet.   A very beautiful caterpillar and moth.

Speaking of hawk moths...

Was watching these humming bird hawk moths in a friend's garden in Mayenne. Spent a long time in France, but never seen them before.

Yes they're wonderful little things aren't they.   Just like a tiny little bird.   I've seen one in the UK a couple of times in 60 years, once when I was a child and once a few years ago.

Humming bird moths are common in Southern Germany, Bavaria. They really look more like birds than insects.

The moth appears frequently in our garden. It seems to prefer the deep red geraniums which my wife has planted in great abundance. The hovering of the moth is most impressive as is its long proboscis which it uncoils into each flower without ever alighting. Although a moth it is very active by day.

Saw one of those humming bird type moths in Reedham village in Norfolk about five years ago, didn't know what it was.... now I do!

 :D I've just discovered what means Caterpillar ... For me it was just a yellow bulldozer at least a yellow engine  :}
