I'm checking out my options for my not as yet built Dumas PT boat - the smaller one with a wooden hull. I really like the Mack Products setup they offer - twin - but they have it set up on 12 volts. Can I put a big 12V battery (5.5 lbs)  in her without it going to the bottom? I know I could do double 6V systems but they are just about as heavy. Any suggestions? Anybody done this? Thanks in advance for your help.

Run it on 2 or 1 12v NIMH 4300.

Component Shop do a 12v 4600mAh battery pack, although on their web site it is listed as the second more expensive 4300

Having built one of these many years back, I can assure you, you have got to keep it as light as possible unless you want a high speed hull wallowing like a walrus.

Racing packs are the way to go, lead acid is just too heavy.

They didn't have brushless motors when mine was made, but if they were available then, that would have been the way it would have gone.

Mine was made with scale running gear and 3 x 380's for power. 5 minutes on the plane was about it, after that, it was back to wallowing.

Thanks for the help gentlemen. I'll get the lightest 12V NIMHs I can find. The only one who will be wallowing around in the water will be me, not my boats.

Triple LiPo? 11.1V

I have one of these and run it on a 9.6v 3300 mAh pack. That gives me roughly 15 minutes of play time. If I had the money I would go to 11.1v LiPo. The Dumas #1233  kit is not the lightest and it seems that the location of any weight you put in it makes a difference to how it goes. I have a video of mine on YouTube - if you search for AlisterL you will find it (it's after the Moonglow on the video).
The motor I am using is a Mabuchi RS540 SH, BTW.
