Engine stop / start: Automatic, determined by throttle demand and idling period

Engine type: Petrol

Number of cylinders: Petrol 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 (link selection procedure)

Engine stop / start: Automatic, determined by throttle demand and idling period

Engine type: Steam

Number of cylinders: Steam 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 (link selection procedure)

Richard,

They sound good. Do we know of anyone who has tried them out yet?

I've heard the diesel in a modern tug and the steam in a tug also. Both sounded fine Barry.

Only three I could find at the moment. Check out our web site.

This shows the adjustments.

thanks for that Richard. I am very impressed and for the money they seem like great value for money.....I just may have to get one for my steam tug, as and when I get on with the build.

Dicky, I'd just like to make it completely clear to everyone that the links to the units on YouTube are not the ones currently on sale at Technobots.  The YouTube video does state that it's work in progress but that does not ensure that people realise that this unit is not the one currently being sold.

The current units are adjustable for number of cylinders but are not adjustable for tickover, 'voice' nor top speed and they do not include a horn.

E'mail recieved from Alan Bond this morning.

Just to clarify the situation :-
The unit currently on sale from Technobots is a ready built and tested 'professional' version of the previous self assembly 'hobbyist' kit launched over 18 months ago, and you will doubtless have heard it running in my pusher tug at the pond. The improvements are really about smaller, neater packaging and the speaker/power and receiver/ESC terminations.  The sounds and features remain identical to those of the previous kit. There are three variants (petrol, diesel or steam) which are chosen at the point of purchase and the only user configuration available is to set the number of cylinders (2 to 6 petrol & diesel or 1 to 6 for steam)

The enhanced unit still in development allows user adjustment of tickover, top speed, number of cylinders (I will be scoping 8 and 12 as well), selection of a number of different engine 'voices' of petrol and diesel character (I have 6 to demo at the moment), speaker volume, idling time-out period, throttle channel 'span' and neutral setting - as well as user selectable options for twin throttle use, automatic or manual start/stop of engine and an adjustable pitch horn.

The significantly greater cost of the hardware to support all these features means the ENHANCED unit will be just that - it is not intended a replacement for the current unit (which we might describe as the BASIC one suitable for smaller boats). The enhanced unit addresses the requirements of bigger boats and I would consider that all the features put it at the top end of the market (for synthesized engine sounds that is!). Again, it would only be available as a ready built and tested 'professional' build standard unit from Technobots.

The cost of the enhanced unit is still unknown, but I'm guessing that if it can't be sold for less than £50 then it is unlikely to be a commercial success and will probably never see the light of day except in my own boats!

@BunkerBarge - small nit-picking correction - the video links posted by DickyD showing boats in action DO in fact all use the sound unit currently available from Technobots, only the 'teaser' video showing adjustments being made is the new unit (still in development). Pedantic I know, but the point here being that the *engine sounds* produced in those videos are no different (merely sub-sets of the number of possible 'voices' in the new unit) , it's just that their settings can't be adjusted. For an explicit description of the differences between the currently available unit and the proposed new one, see the mail I sent to Dicky (before I found this thread!) part of which he has posted above.

I'm sorry that my latest video has caused such confusion, I'd hoped I'd made it clear in the description on YouTube that it was WORK IN PROGRESS (capitals used) and the whole description was written in the future tense. The purpose of posting that video was to get feedback from potential users to allow me to make trade offs between (maybe unwanted) complexity and cost and/or incorporate user suggested features that hadn't already occurred to me. As a result I am already having valuable dialogue with a number of modellers on this score, and I welcome any further input from this Forum.

I undertake to publish any caveat you'd care to pen as the first item in the Youtube wording that you feel makes the situation absolutely crystal clear to everyone - clearly I am too close to this to have done so effectively.

To further open out the discussion, I have no plans to offer the steam engine variant in this latest unit. Why not? - well I believe to improve on the present steam sound, different hardware is needed to envelope shape the 'chuffs' and provide a background 'sizzle' whilst the engine is at rest. Not a lot of steam variants have been sold over the last year so I doubt if I'd expend effort on it (unless I hear different!)

On the personal front, good luck with your twin sound unit installation, only the second one I've heard of - we will be interested to hear your impressions.

Best regards

Alan Bond

Alan, Many thanks for all your clarification, which I'm sure now leaves no doubt as to which unit is which.  What I have so far failed to mention is the fact that the single unit I rigged up to my pusher tug works superbly and sounds extreemly effective.  Unfortunately I am now back at work so I'll not be able to play around with it any more for another three months however as soon as I am back home I'll be trying out the two sound modules together.  I am completely sold on the easy installation and ease of operation, which I'm sure a lot of modellers will also find appealling.  The boat is quite a large hull, springer type of shape, and reflects sound extreemly well, although I need to get it on the water for the complete effect.  I'm also using 12v so the volume is more than enough as well!  I like the way the signal passes through so you don't need a "Y" lead and i like the fact that you don't need an additional channel to control it, everything is done from the throttle channel.

If your twin unit is just as good and just as simple to install and operate I'll be on the lookout for one of those as well!

Does your diesel and petrol units still operate the same if you reverse your motor IE  Motor forward sound operates through all the speed range and when you reverse the motor the revs slow down then rise as you reverse ? Hope I have typed that out so the meaning is understood !

Hi Richard , just thought i would tell you . I have had one of these sound units from technobots for over a year now .
I have the diesel sound unit working as a twin cylinder , it start's up on the throttle and increases in speed both ways , as well as shutting down in neutral after a while .
It also has the non starting cranking sound if you twitch the throttle from center either way and quickly back to center .
Mine came as a kit (the lads made it up for me) and the speaker is enclosed in a box , its a bit tinny out of the boat , but once in the hull acts as a resonator .
well worth the money .
daz
ps it's in Bucket (springer) and Scarper .

Just put one of these sound systems in my Solent Class lifeboat - great fun !

Even running off just 8.4v power source its loud.

Im utilising the bow area inside the hull as a sound box, having blanked it off with a piece of ply with a hole cut in the centre, and the speaker mounted here - gives quite a throaty sound.

Very good value.

Via email to Mayhem...

Does anyone know if this unit simulates "large diesel engine" eg, a modern tug?

... lets take it as read, that you can't hear a ships engine while at sea!.... been there, done that!    Martin <*<

You obviously haven't been on the south coast of Tennerife and seen (AND Heard) the Fred Olsen wave piercer from Los Christianos to La Gomera.  >>:-(

Thanks Dicky.

 I see it's now moved to: http://www.technobotsonline.com/light-and-sound-effects/model-engine-sound-effects.html

Interestingly, it's a different unit on the Solent website?!?!?  - http://www.srcmbc.org.uk/ht_afb_sound-units_marine-engine.php
