Beginner looking for the next step!
« on: August 14, 2009, 01:17:00 pm »

Hi,
My name is Nigel, and I am based in Southampton. I am new to RC Boats, and purchased a cheap boat (simialr to http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HUGE-RC-RADIO-CONTROL-RACING-FLYING-FISH-SPEED-BOAT_W0QQitemZ380123871571QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item588125f953&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262), just to get a taster, and see if I actually liked it. I know it isn't a great boat, but it was an easy and cheap (I only paid £60) way to get started. I have had this boat for about a month now, and enjoy playing around with it. Subsequently my son, and a friend also purchased similar boats! Now that we have started to get the bug I am looking for a cost effective way of moving to the next level (more speed, more manouverable!).
I don't particularly want to build from scratch, but I am quite happy working from a hull, and adding motor, radio stuff etc.

So here are the questions:
What would you recommend as a cost effect boat?
How much will I have to spend?
Is Electric or nitro the way to go?
Where can I buy good secondhand gear to keep the cost down, or is that a false economy?
Could I use the existing boat, and add new motor, radio, rudder etc. (I like the look/size of this boat)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Nigel and welcome to the forum.
I recently found myself in your position and I went to one of our members for a deep vee, you will find him in the traders section under boats built to order. You will find him very helpful and if you only want a hull I am sure he will do that for you.

Hi Nigel welcome to the forum if you go the nitro route you will be limited to the Southampton Model Boat Club pond in the Forest at Stoney Cross.

On our lake at Setley we are not allowed even fast electrics.

Hi Nigel and welcome
I know it's a while off yet, but the Offshore Model Racing Assn will be racing down your way on 13th Sept at Calshot Activity Centre.
We are racing on the sea so should be 'interesting' to watch!  I expect there will be over 50 boats there and racing is from 10 - 4pm approx.
Info is on the omra-uk.org website.
Just one of many types of model boating (but does involve quite a bit of driving as the races are all over the country).
Cheers
Danny

Thanks for the kind words Malc much appreciated.Nigel gime a shout anytime i allways have boats on the go heres a cpl of the ones ive done recently.Ive sold them all over the country with 100% good feedback so far and ive even sold them overseas too. They will accept anything from a cheap strimmer setup to a fully modded zenoah, and they handle the rough stuff brilliantly see these video's on the sea Isle of Wight.
