WHICH SERVO AND HOW TO MOUNT IT
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:27:32 am »

Greetings, for the first time I would like to use something other than the standard servos that come with most cheap radio sets. I want to control a small throttle valve on a steam plant and would like to hide a small servo out of sight. My problem is that there are so many different servos and micro servos available that I have no idea what to choose. I do know that the standard Futaba 3003 seems to have far more power and travel than I need. I would also like to mount the servo in an out of the way place that will make it impossible to get at the mounting screws and it has been suggested that I just velcro the servo to the side of the cockpit. Is this a reasonable idea? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks, Ian.

A Ripmax SD200 should do it, they're cheap and the fast electrical people use them for their rudders.

I would hesitate to use Velcro direct on a small servo case. The sheer forces aren't great but can - and probably will - move the loops over the hooks and shift the position of the servo, thus mucking up the throttle setting. The glue might also soften in a steamy atmosphere.
I'd suggest trying thin, double-sided foam pads e.g. Sticky Fixers.

Never tried velcro, another way is to wrap servo in electrical type tape and epoxy to surface of choice,if its not under great strain you can use tape over mounting spline and just press fit the servo horn.
Or two wood blocks epoxied to surface with curtain hooks screwed in and servo held in place with a cable tie.if you need to make a adjustment simply cut and replace tie when done.
As to servos I use standard in most applications and for smaller locations Hitec HS81 work for me.
Would consider high torque servos if needed ie Korts etc.
I try and avoid the real small ones as they are far to small for my hands and eyes.
Hope this helps Chris

Dropped into a close fitting box works fine.  The "box" can be anything protruding from the mounting surface that will prevent movement strong enough to resist the force generated, and something to prevent it falling out.  In the case of a throttle linkage, I expect that the force will not be much.
Cable ties work well, as do wire ties.

Polyurethane Glue, (PU Glue), is great for mounting servos.

All the best
