« on: August 18, 2009, 07:20:59 pm »

good evening everybody
my name is niels and come from holland
i am new here and would like to ask  about
a tug i wil start to build. its the brackengarth from mmm models
i was looking on the net for some pictures of the tug but there are not so many around
are here any modelers who have build this tug?
i want this tug to be a real puller so i was thinking of a 24 volt motor with a reduction 3.1
and a 110mm  4or 5 blade topt of prop for maximum power.
do you have any ideas  what wil be the best setup?
                        kind regards niels %)

Hello Niels! Welcome aboard!

Here is a photo of Brackengarth which you might not have seen: http://www.tugspotters.com/tugs/brackengarth.htm  in its Liverpool "Rea Towing Company" colours (which really suit it I think)
And here is a link to some very nice model tugs including "Rowangarth": http://www.classictugs.co.uk/north-east_model_boat_show_2009.html

It is certainly a good looking vessel and I'm sure it will make a great model. Good luck with the construction.

All the best

Hi Niels , mine has a 90mm 4 blade in a kort , not sure of the weight but with 2 12v 12ah bats in her belly and just a little lead at the back end she sits well in the water.
The crane is my own build/design and is articulated but just for show , when i built this model i decided to add my own touches and i didnt like the weedy crane on the plan , the same went with the funnels , or the lack of them ( i cant doo funnels) i decided to update the engines to turbo cat diesels for the sound unit and fit 4 exhaust pipes . but if you look for the full size tug now under her new name Henrik ( i think thats how it's spelt) she has simular exhaust stacks .

hello daz
thanks for the info
i want to run the boat with a 110mm kort nozzle
and if there is enough space i want make a larger nozzle
myself.just for max pulling power.
in our towing companywww.iskestugs.nlwe have a bp competion with some other
co workers. they al have twin screw tugs.and thats why i want to make this one a real beast.
i hope that tomorrow the package wil be deliverd here so i can start building.
                                  regards niels

Hi Tractortug i have never tried a dead tow.
She pulled a 10ft rowing boat with two men in around the lake no problem.

Mobile marine who do the hull and kit do a 110mm kort and the motor/shaft to suit and it can be ordered direct from Bryan , the only thing you have to get yourself is the prop and there are a few out there that will supply one for you .
My 90mm one is just a standard prop but if i replaced it with a propper kort prop then the power would increse maybe 25% more , i am not sure , but as it is i have no problem pulling me around in the recovery boat . it also works well for shifting debris from the bottom of the pond with the prop wash.

To Tugnut,
Hi John, great model!!!  Was it made as per kit plans? Every Brackengarth model I have seen seems to have the guard rails running round the inside of the inflatable liferafts. She actually had them running straight along the edge of the deck which is actually easier to do. There was a drop down section in the rails for launching the rafts. Also the lifeboat did not have the rails around the inboard side, they stopped at either end.
There was also an opening on the after end of the boatdeck on the starboard side for a companionway ladder down to the main deck.
I am not criticising an excellent model in any way but I just thought it might be helpful to anyone else building the Brackengarth.
Cheers Fred
