Has anyone run a Graupner 700 Race 9.6 volt (plain bearing) motor on 12 cells? Was the motor ok running on that voltage? Any problems?

Bit off an open question that one ! is the hull hydro or mono, is it for fun or racing ?

hi I'm running the 8.4 on a hydro 12cells an a octura 645 the motor gets barely warm

You shouldn't have any problems at all. I used to run a 9.6v on 14 cells in the old Formula One class (submerged drive system) many years ago and it just got warm, certainly not hot. I assume you will be water cooling the motor? You will get more speed from an 8.4v 700BB though, I used to use these for hydro racing with 12 cells some years ago but they were only set up to run for about 3 minutes!! Quite a blast......

Bridkid, I also have a 8.4v 700BB, so I can try both motors out and see which is best.

It's a boat I scratch built from some photos I had of the original but I did change it rather a lot and also redesigned the hull running surface. You can see my build method here.

The 8.4bb is the better motor for speed,14 cells with a Graupner Carbon K45
isn't a problem.Make sure your speedo's up for it, good water cooling and motor/shaft alignment
12 cells with either motor will be fine.

Bridkid, thanks for the link to your website. Interesting boat. I saw the full-sized boat race at Hull back in the nineties.

Yes, the original was in Bridlington for a round of the World Offshore Circuit Racing Championships during the nineties and that's when I took a load of photos, promising myself that I would build one at some point. Unfortunately due to bad weather in the bay I never got to see 'Jet' race. I was told at the time that she was a great boat, something entirely different, far more stable than a conventional hull and winning pretty much everything around.

The boat was designed by Lorne Campbell. He seems to have a thing about three-pointers. His designs have had many successes in 2-litre and 4-litre races. I "found" one boat that he'd designed at a boatyard next to the Thames once, in the late seventies. It was in a scruffy, sorry state. With a full-race V8 MerCruiser engine in the back covered with a tatty bit of carpet. A piece of kit like that discarded like an old boot!

Discarded it may well have been but I'd wager that if you tried to take it away there would soon be someone telling you not to!
