It depends on what exact parts and how many are used in the output stage of controller.A decent scan will show that.It isnt't going to work at much under 3 volt because,at that point, the esc processor will shut down.
Wih a voltmeter,you can hunt for a voltage boosting circuit which are used to prevent overheating in escs.The size,simplicity and normal price would suggest that that there is not going to be one here.

Yes, it is unlikely that this esc is protected. However, I can detect no heating by holding the esc while it is running at low volts. The key issue for EeZebilts is the number of cells - the small boats will just hold 4 AA, so if 3 NiMH can be used there will be room for a receiver and servo in the spare space. Otherwise it will have to be AAA...
