MESH FOR RADARS
« on: August 31, 2009, 02:21:31 pm »

Dear All,

Apart from specialist screen and sieve mfrs. (that I am aware of), does anyone know a source for mesh of a screen size of between 1.5 or 2mm? - must be square format mesh(I only need a sheet of about 4"x 4"). The mesh must be a 'welded' type so that it can be cut as small as wished without unravelling - viz., a woven square type mesh that has been plated with something so it won't unravel, or one that has been pressed out.

I have dismantled a new small shaker sieve and have lightly coated it in plastic, but if it doesn't work while cutting I will need to find 'proper' stuff!

Hi ya there Bernard (Polaris)

I wonder if you have thought of using the net curtaining materials - that hang at window?   I have used this several times myself for radar mesh.   Also air intakes on the type 42 which I am building.

Have a look at the build I am doing in Warships - you can see where I am using it.   To add stiffening to the materials you can spray with diluted paint or watered paint should I say.    Or, PVA glue diluted down a bit.

When I paint it - I either spray/hand paint it - if I hand paint it I use a stiff brush and 'stipple' it so as not to clog the mesh up .....  food for thought.

Go to your local craft/haberdashery shop and look at tapestry/cross stitch mesh both treated, stiffened cotton and plastic available in many mesh sizes.

Just a heads up.

That's the car body mesh you get from Halford. You get two sheets in the pack for £1.99. This seller is chancing their arm  <*<, don't buy it it's a con......Go to Halfords if you go for this  O0. Another point is that it has a diamond mesh. {:-{

Dear All,

Thankyou very much to all who troubled to reply.

John, I can see what you are saying - and for what you are thinking I can see it working - unfortunately I need something a bit more robust for the application.

Mike, I have been down the alloy/aluminium route, and unfortunately it's not strong enough for what I need - and doesn't like bending very much! However, I am sure it is first class for many applications... unfortunately not mine!

Gingyer, though I was initially thinking of steel, brass is spot on! Thankyou! A very useful Link, and I am sure others will find it interesting as well. Thanks again :-))

Dear Mark,

You were writing yours at the same time I was writing sending mine!

True what you say. I happened to notice a one sheet 'pack' at a small local garage for £1.10 when I went to pick something up for someone: I knew it was a touch over, but it saved me about £1 or so of driving! - so was 'happy' to pay in this respect! - at the time... and considering I was driving someone else's vehicle anyway! - so nil travelling cost put me in pocket right from the start really! :}

Have you thought about cannibalising a frying pan splash guard. Plenty of mesh to get your teeth/cutters into.

The 4 sheets this person is selling works out at 308 square centimetres. You can actually get 483cm squared from a single sheet from Halfords, and as I said it's sold as a pack of two for £1.99. This person is basically selling less than one sheet for the price of two plus £1.60 p&p. Buy it from Halfords there is nearly one beside every large Asda in every town.

Dear Gingyer,

Whilst I thank you for your contact with these people, despite two emails to request the gauge of the sheets in question, I have yet to receive a reply! It will probably be forthcoming eventually and in the end.

Even if a Co. has no interest in ones purchase enquiry, it would at least be 'nice' if they would at reply properly. So many don't bother with the niceties of courteous attitude these days - and then wonder why we go elsewhere... come the day when they actually want and need our business!

Please don't missunderstand this email... it applies to one or two other 'suppliers' as well.

Dear Gingyer,

I think it will probably be better for me to ring them in the end. I am currently waiting for two Co.'s to get back to me from their Websites (non model connected). Many Co.'s are very efficient of course, but some, whilst they have lovely 'all singing and dancing' Sites, only monitor sales enquiry emails from their Site every few weeks - this was actually said by a Co. last month.

The 3mm x 2mm brass mesh is exactly what I need and have been looking for. They show two entries with the same part no., and all I need to know is whether this is accidental or whether one is a different gauge/thickness from the other. My trial with the sieve mesh failed dismally, so I am looking forward to getting the proper stuff!

Hi Bernard,
I have used them a couple of times with no problems
and they were recommended to me

It is a shame people don't reply to emails and the like as they will loose business

Dear Colin,

Thankyou for your email. Just popped in for a few mins..

I am sure they will reply, indeed, there might be a problem with their emails. Anyway, no problem, I will give them a ring and I am sure all will be fine. They have some excellent stuff... they have some hand tools for gen. work that I have been looking for for quite some while.
