Help needed with replacement rack
« on: September 01, 2009, 07:04:28 pm »

Hi all...

I have one of the old Zenith Photosniper cameras from the 70's, but theres a problem with the nylon focussing rack.
Someones forced it at some point and chewed awau part of the teethm making seeting the lens to infinity an hit & miss affair, is there anyone here with the facilities to cut a new one, possibly from alloy/brass in the home workshop?

Local companies prices are out of the question, so Im looking for a fellow modeller to possibly help me out, I am willing to pay within reason of course. I do have some copper tube suitable for boilers that can be traded too, so hopefully we can get something arranged.

Please get in touch if you can help?

have you thought about ebay for a broken camera to salvage the parts you need?

or even just asking the repair company to supply only?

Bill,

It isn't such an easy job.

The first problem is finding out what the profile of the tooth is, and the main problem after that is getting a cutter that will cut a rack rather than a gear.

A cutter to do that starts around £25 if it is a standard size, then look upwards from that point.

Ideally, it would need to be done on an horizontal miller, a rather specialist machine in a home workshop nowadays.

So it isn't really a job that you can cut corners on.

You can buy ready made lengths of rack from gear suppliers, usually in nylon, brass or steel, then machine that down to fit the area on you camera mount. But again, you would need to quote the tooth form.

Just an example

My cameras are fine, its a nylon rack from inside the lens thats the problem.

One of the sellers is in the USSR and appears to be a dealer in cameras there, so I've contacted him in the hope of finding a replacement.
Hopefully some 'Ivan' has trashed a lens at some point, badly scratched, dented whatever...I live in hope and appreciate your find.  :-))

Meanwhile I'll work on the monster puffer... :D
