Is there an article to accompany?
« on: September 05, 2009, 07:58:12 am »

Hi all I have just received my plans from My hobby store for a 1:32 dog boat. I was wondering if there was an article in the magazine to accompany the plans, or if any one had a copy they could send/email me. The plans have line drawings, bulkheads, side and plan elevation. But they are drawn with only one prop and shaft. I want to find out what size of motor to use and if I do scale (four shafts). If there are any recommendations for motor?

Any input will be greatfully received. O0

Hi Mark,

Suggested reading (possibly from library)

'The Fairmile D ' Motor Torpedo Boat by John Lambert ISBN 0 84486 006

or

'Allied Coastal Forces of World War II ' Volume 1: Fairmile designs & U.S. Submarine Chasers by John Lambert & Al Ross ISBN 0 85177 519

Both excellent reference books

I have the first book on your list. I will be using this for most of my reference material, but I don't know what size electric motors to put in. What size for one shaft, what size for 4 shafts? I Thought about MFA 385 motors for the four shafts, but not sure if this will give scale speed. Would I just be better going for twin shafts and 2x 540 or 545 motors?

Hi mark.
Is there an article to accompany?  yes there is in early issues of marine modelling mag. Do they not have any in the  Richmond club library or have they all ended up in the pot belly stove.  I have some @ the midden (work shop) but I would have to ge a sniffer dog in to find them..LOL..

Sorry to revive an old thread, but my question follows on from an earlier post in this thread and seemed worthwhile adding it here...
Two books were recommended for Fairmile D research:

'The Fairmile D ' Motor Torpedo Boat by John Lambert ISBN 0 84486 00

or:  'Allied Coastal Forces of World War II ' Volume 1: Fairmile designs & U.S. Submarine Chasers by John Lambert & Al Ross ISBN 0 85177 519

I've bought a copy of the first. Is the second one worth getting, or is it just duplicate information?

Thanks,
Pete.

The Fairmile D is as you now know is an excellent source of drawings and fittings diagrams.
The Allied Coastal Forces book is more of a development and design history of the two designs mentioned. It’s a stunning book if you like to know your subject but if you just want to build a model the anatomy of the ship book is the most helpful. There will be some pictures in the second book that definitely won’t be in the other but the second book covers Fairmile A to H and all the US Subchasers whilst the first book will just concentrate on the Fairmile D.

I will point out that I have both books, but you maybe interested to know that the Allied Coastal Forces book is being re-released with updates and is cheaper than the original two pre-releases.
