Rain Stops Play?
« on: September 06, 2009, 03:07:07 pm »

Hi all,
I'm pretty much new to Model boats, but being only 16 i suppose i haven't had much time  ok2
Ive read articles and been to places where boats have been sailing, and as soon as it starts to rain, even just slightly, boats are taken out of the water, or in  the case of an article, they say "rain stops play"
But i cant understand why, surely, it should be okay to sail model boats whilst its raining, as its only water, and the same stuff they sail in?
Also, Ive seen it where people complain its too choppy, i can understand when it gets really rough, but surely a little bit of choppy water cant be that much of  problem?
I'm just a bit confused  {:-{
Cheers,
Ste   :-))

People are afraid of getting their boats wet :-))

It's the fact that if the transmitters get wet then that's that. I don't stop in the rain, niether do a lot of people, you just stick a plastic bag over the transmitter. However some races do stop due to the rain, because you can't see what's going on with your boat.

Choppy water isn't a problem for the OMRA lot, their boats are for Offshore boats by definition of their name, though I do multi's which cant handle rough water due to the shape of the hull. Scale boats have problems in the chop because if you think about it, even a 2 inch wave is the scale size of a few feet, hitting the boat a couple of times a second.

I don,t think its a case of people worrying about getting their boats "wet" or tranny,s for that matter,Its more likely to be,themselves their worry about,Ok, I know skins waterproof, but standing in pouring rain is,nt much fun, especially if as is the norm, its cold with it,

hi there

I don't think it is fair to say that some scale modellers are afraid of sailing their vessels in strong winds & weather as there are a few from South Shields Model boating club, notably a stupid bloke called Bluebird  :P  he used to look out regularly for the wind and rain days to sail his models  :D  not difficult to wait for on the North East Coast UK.

The old saying is 'if you cant build a model to withstand some weather - then dont bother building it' - I know there are some people on the North side of the Tyne river who are frightened to put their models in the water if the sun doesnt shine  ok2

I am including a couple of pics of HMS Orkney sailing in a gale force wind - one of the pics you can see the said bluebird struggling to stand up in the wind - it also proves the photographs arent tampered with using photoshop - all genuine.

Usually, I am a fair weather sailor.  Which is why I am here today and not down the pond.  Getting wet in our climate is not something I choose to volunteer for.
A couple of years ago one of my members was showing his new lifeboat at an outdoor do, and a cloudburst came over.  He later found about a pint of water inside.  The conclusion was that the force of water bouncing up got past the coaming/superstructure join, and that was on a display stand.
Some of mine are definitely fair weather only, but my yachts sail in sometimes silly conditions, as does my pilot launch and corvette.
I used to have a PE instructor way back in school days.  He insisted that everybody should show "enthusiasm" for running in circles in the rain.  I rapidly regarded him as a berk (rhyming slang, "berkshire hunt"="foolish person"), as did manny others (who became a session musician specialising in compilation LPs), deciding that running in a circle only got you back where you started and was thus pointless, and getting wet and cold as an amateur was even more pointless.

Each Model Boat or Full sized Ship has a limit to the weather they can handle and in models this is even more true ... No two vessels are the same even if they are the same class or type The same goes for the Captains/Masters/Skippers/Owners the level of skill , competence and experience will be deferent. It is just poor seamanship to sail a vessel in conditions you are not happy with... My ships are built in the main to take pretty heavy weather because I sail on a large lake but I would never condemn anyone for not wanting to sail in rain, windy or gusty conditions or even Bright sun light

We had some testing to with our ships before a battle, so we went out
and it started showering... We ran for about two hours, then packed up.
As soon as we left,... then it started to rain...  ;)

Sometimes when sitting by the pond I feel that part of the hobby is akin to fishing. This thread makes me realise that (most) of us have far more sense than fishermen and happily a hobby that has a significant indoor dimension.
I note the question was posed by a sixteen year old - nobody over twice that age would need to ask.  %%
