I am currently building a second model of the RNLB Thomas McCunn, this time at 1/12th. As with the 1/16th model it will be a display model with interior details. I was sent pictures of a surviving Weyburn C4 petrol engine, two of which were the original power plants, by a member of this forum, Lance aka furball. This has allowed me to make a better representation of the engines for the model, so thank you Lance and I hope you like the results.
1 & 2 : A block of wood was laminated to give me the basic size for the main cylinder block, marked out and cut/shaped to size.
3 : The scrap box was raided for tubes, rods and strip to make the basic engine /gearbox shapes.
4 : After sanding and shaping the whole assembly was given a couple of coats of primer.
5 : The motors for slowly spinning the props were sleeved to make them fit into the end of the gearbox housings.
6 : After a little more work the whole assembly was painted with two coats of white paint and the bolt heads painted black.
7,8,9 & 10 : The brass starting handles were then made as well as the polished copper air intakes. These were raised to allow the engines to run under water in the event of the engine room flooding.
These engines will be fitted into the model at a later date.
