HMS Belfast plans
« on: September 25, 2009, 07:12:06 pm »

Hi guys,

New to the forum but not to building model boats. I am planning my next project, but require the plans for HMS Belfast preferably in 1/96. Does anyone have a set going or know of where to get some?

Deans Marine make a 1/96 HMS Belfast hull, so they may have plans (worth checking). If not try here www.taubmansonline.com for a set of plans in 1/192.

Deans may still have some 1/96 plans available. Otherwise you may need to get the Sambrook plan from Loyalhanna in the US: http://www.loyalhannadockyard.com/ ( same link as RSM above) If you are thinking of building Belfast then get a copy of Ross Watton's book "Anatomy of the Ship - the Cruiser Bellfast". There was another set of plans drawn by E.N. Wilson but these are part of the David MacGregor range held by the SS Great Britain Project and currently unavailable.

cheers John, no doubt I will be in touch again once the project has started.

I can't believe how difficult it is to get the plans of such a popular ship.

Does anyone know if the Fleetscale Town Class model could be modified to be Belfast?

Belfast was bigger than the Towns and the hull was substantially modified after her mining early in the war so using the Fleetscale hull could be difficult and not accurate. Also the deck layout was totally different of course. Belfast was extensively modified during her career so you would need to be very careful at what date you intend to depict her. Ross Watton's book is an indispensable reference. The Sambrook plan depicts the ship at the end of WW2 I think.

Personally I think that the Towns were much better looking ships and you have the option of showing Manchester in China Station colours.

Thanks for the input Colin, I will investigate the Town Class further, I didn't realise that Belfast was so very different to the others.
