Arun class hull

Picked up a 12th scale Arum hull, almost finished, leaving me with a superstructrure to build.

My son (technical Dept) was casting around for reference photos and was of the opinion that it looked very much like the Severn/Trent class hulls, can anyone tell me if there are major differences that we're not seeing in on-line pics ?

It would also appear that Arun's are rare these days, so a quick shift at this stage may be prudent.

Hi Billy,
The Arun is 15.1mtrs long...at 1/12 scale that would make your hull ....49.5"
The Trent is 14.2 mtrs so that would make it 46.5"
The Severn is 17 mtrs ......55.7"
Time to get the tape measure out mate :-))

I know theres a slight difference in length, but I can scale the superstucture up/down to suit, its the the general hullform Im looking at for now.

The current Troon boat is a Severn, so much easier to get pics etc.

thee is quite alot of differance in the hull design
and the way they are shaped I am led to believe
phone the polis and go see their big boat it is an Arun

I just did an overlay in PhotoShop Colin, its very similar, but that section at the steps is much longer in the Severn and cant be adapted easily...so Arun its is then!
I bet old Jim McKay had loads of detail pics of the Arun, the only other was Fred Obrien and we dont see him these days eh?
Big Shug says he has a plan somewhere, but theres no great rush yet, we were looking inside tonight and theres enough done to allow us to start fitting motors and whatnot. I fancy doing one that can handle a wave and send it battering out on the Lomond !

The Strathclyde bizzies did have an Arun Colin, but I believe they changed it recently.

Hang on....its the Trent thats longer at the steps, Trent is better bu theres something different at the stern in that pic Brian, something sticking down like the 'hook' ine Tyne class ???

My understanding is that all Aruns have now been taken out of service with the RNLI There is one in the lifeboat Museum at Chatham Historric Dockyard.

just checked with the polis apparently they double parked it on a rock
and it had to get towed away {-) {-) {-)
to much to get repaired so sold to a private collector

A quick e mail to the rnli will get you some pics , ive built a couple of lifeboats and theye were very helpful even supplying plans for a small charge

The Canadian Coast Guard continue to use Arun boats for coastal rescue, although they were built under licence in Canada - there,s  a lot of detailed  info about each boat on their home website. Interestingly they run at higher quoted max speeds (20+ knots) than those that were in rnli service. The CCG Aruns are now gradually being replaced by smaller American CG types.  :-)

To answer the original question the Main differences are the Bilge keels and the Chine of the hull. The Severn/Trent have bilge keels and a hard chine and the Arun has no bilge keels and a round chine.

The next thing to check is the 1/12 hull you have a 52' or a 54' the 54's have a round stern and the 52's have a flat stern. There where only five 54's built 54-03 to 54-07.
Now for the wheelhouse. these where not all the same boats 52-01 52-02 and 54-03 all had one off wheelhouse's and 52-01 had flat side decks 54-04 through to 52-07 all had the GRP wheelhouse that can be seen in the picture that Martin posted. all the boats from 52-11 to 52-46 had the aluminium panel top.

I can tell you where the Arun the Strathclyde police had is now. It belongs to a friend of mine and is at Portishead been repainted orange renamed back to her original name and is available for trips http://www.thearunexperience.co.uk/ I was out on it last weekend for a couple of hours and she's in really good condition. 

As you mentioned Troon they had 52-38 City of Glasgow lll from 1987 to 2004

now someone mentioned a Watson. Which one ? there were 8 Watson designs that had motors fitted :P {-)

Hi, do not forget that the Arun has semi tunnels underneath & the rudders are offset to the prop shafts, so you can withdraw the shafts without disturbing the rudder gear.

I'm currently building the Model Slipway Trent kit (1/16th scale). I notice that you mention the Troon boat in your post, are you local to there? I'm in Troon as well, so if it would help you out you're welcome to pour over my plans.

Arun class the City of Glasgow
not the present one

Where do you sail out o interest ?

Hi Nemesis

Are you getting your Arun's and Severn's Mixed up. All the information I have about the Arun shows no semi tunnels and the rubber is in-line with the prop shaft. The Severn does have semi tunnels created by the Bilge keels and I do know that the rudder and shafts are not in-line so you can remove the shaft without removing the rudder. It also helps with steering when running on one engine.

On the drawings that I have for the 54 ft  Arun ON1052, the GA as fitted sheet, Drawing  No 16M/10689/A (Dec 1978) shows that the centre line of the propshafts is just inboard of the rudder shafts by about 3".

The Composite Lines Plan for the 52 and 54 ft Arun, Drawing No 16M/8821/A (Dec 1973) shows that there are no "tunnels" as such, just shallow indentations in the hull.

Hi Gingyer,

Until now i've used a boating pond behind the Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine. It's quite a large expanse of flat water, although you do have to negotiate the odd shopping trolley dumped by Irvine's less desirable people.

I've heard that Largs has a good club so I think i'll be sailing my Trent there.

gribeauval's drawing is correct for all the Aruns. If you have the Models by Design / Metcalf / whereever it was from originally hull with the moulded on deck, then the hull shape is incorrect under the waterline, as it doesn't have the 'tunnels' moulded in at all.

Could you please let me know where you got the Arun lines plans from? I've been looking for some lines and/or table of offsets for some time now but have had no luck. GA's i know are available from the RNLI but alass no lines....

Any help appreciated.
