centre/edge finders
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:03:59 am »

Can anyone recommend any edge/centre finders?

I have done google search, there are lots from wigglers (dunno how they work) which are cheap, to laser jobbies that look good and easy to use, so, am now asking those of you who own and or used any of these things to shed some light?

Thanks

Ian

are you looking to find the centre of the end of a round bar? search for 'centre square'.

Bee,

Thanks, but no, its for finding the edge of a bit of metal so I can mill accurately. They can also be used for centering a drill accurately.

Hi Ian

I work in a machine shop and I prefer the type shown on the left of this picture.  I use this type every day.  They are cheap and plenty accurate most of the time.

Macey,

Thanks for that.

Any chance you could do a quick description of how to use these things?

Ok - I can do that but maybe look at this first.

I have no idea if there is sound with this as i have no speakers on my laptop.

Just remember that when the edge finder 'wobbles off' you then need to move the job half the diameter of the probe on your edge finder to have your spindle centre over the edge of your job. If you want to know more just shout.

BMM, you could always nip over to Boggy's fan club on :-  http://madmodder.net/ , plenty of Moshining help over there.

I have a wiggler but prefer to use my laser gadget. It wasn't the cheapest option but saves time and reduces errors.
