Shoreham war vessel needs cash to stay afloat
6:00pm Sunday 27th September 2009

A tug boat which helped save thousands of soldiers' lives needs hundreds of thousands of pounds to be saved itself.

Challenge was one of hundreds of vessels that performed a heroic role in Operation Dynamo when more than 338,000 Allied troops were rescued from the French beaches.

It fell into disrepair after the war ended and now needs emergency work to keep it afloat.

Challenge was the last working steam tug on the River Thames and is currently moored in Shoreham.

Once restored again it will be involved in a maritime education programme visiting ports along the South Coast.

Jerry Lewis, the chairman of the Dunkirk Little Ships Restoration Trust, said he was preparing a £1 million bid for lottery funding but said he was looking for volunteers.
