Chemical Blackening

I am about to start constructing the steering chain mechanism for my Torpedo Boat. I have got some suitable brass chain, but need to blacken it. Does anyone know of a cheap, easy-to-use chemical blackener?

Roy,

Does this really work? Will it deal with the soldered bits? I know Coke is a good cleaner - so good I'd never drink it! - but does it blacken brass? I thought it made copper shiny.

Just don't leave it there to long as it will eat the brass, do not rub it or it will shine.........
