Making a Bow Bumper
« on: October 10, 2009, 09:06:18 am »

Tried to find an article on this without much success so I thought I'd just have a go at making one.

I shaped a piece of ply into the shape I wanted, covered it in a thin coat of vasaline and suspended it in a small container of plaster of paris.

When this had fully cured (dry), I gave it the vasaline treatment and then carefully filled it with black silicone (the smelly type), trying to avoid bubbles getting trapped.

Left it for 24 hours (the hardest part for me  :}), then carefully removed the molding.

Quite pleased with the first attempt.

Gary.

Always great to see some pictures, thanks a lot for sharing.

Is this some special silicone or just the silicone sealant for bathrooms you get from B&Q?

Cheers,
Andy

Its the one that smells like 'peardrop' sweets Andy.

Use the same stuff to stick it on with and leave it alone for 24 hours. (the hard bit %) )

I say Chaps,

Would it be too "infra dig" to make Bumpers out of an old (broken, worn) Motor Car Timing Belt?
Unfortunately - I think that a flat surface would be required for this. However - I have seen Modern Full Sized
Tug Boats with this type of Bow and Stern Bumper.

Just a thought,

Ricky.
