I think that with cranes, the scale may not be too critical because it will depend on the capacity of the real crane.

On full size, a 100t crane is larger than a 25t crane.

On a model, a 1:25 scale 100t crane might be the same size as a 1:50 scale 25t crane - I think %%

Confused? so am I!

That right lol

The crane will look too big at 1/32 scale.

Look at it this way - a 1:1 model, i.e. full size,  will be bigger than a 1:100 model, as long as they're of the same prototype.  A 1:1 model of a Mirror dinghy will probably be smaller than a 1:100 model of one of the modern VLCCs.

...Hi Swampbug...

If you are building in 1/50 or 1/48 scale and looking for a Hiab style crane then look at Corgi type trucks on E-Bay...
There are a couple of hiabs for sale at this scale on E-Bay...
I have a metal Hiab Crane at 1/50 scale but it is quite heavy...

...Best Regards...Norry...

To unconfuse you Swampbug, 1/50th scale = It takes 50 models to make the full sized one in length,  1/32nd = ???

So which is the biggest??  :-))

The most confusion occurrs when people start talking 1/4 scale and 1/4" to the foot etc. (No, I'm not going to complicate THAT one)   %%

When looking at cranes and such, if there are no people-sized references, like doors, seats, control panel heights, etc, its just the overall size that needs to look right.  For instance, a seat that looks big enough for you to park a Fiat on it looks wrong, and going the other way so would a door that looks the right size for a cat flap.
When haunting the toy shops hunting for bits n pieces, I try to have something with me that approximates to a model person in whatever scale it is, to act as a comparison, rather than rely on memory.
