Newbie with a boring boat
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:26:51 am »

Hello there and greetings from sunny germany (just kidding)  :embarrassed:
I found this forum because of the huge amount of postings and pictures about springer-boats. One of these will be my first non-kit-project.

But I also have another question.

I have this old Graupner Fire Patrol Boat, which I find rather boring. (I think I am too old for cruising around the pond with a fire-boat like that.)  :P
I am looking for interesting ideas of what to make of this. I have some basic ideas, but haven't found the right spark to light me up yet.

I thought maybe I could make it look very rotten and old. Like a boat no one has taken care of for a couple of years and then hijacked by a bunch of modern pirates or something in that direction.
What do you think?

Is there anyone who made something interesting out of this?

The picture is only an example. Mine hasn't really been finished like that.

Hy Aurigarius
IF you want to break the model down, why not remove the fire monitor. Take away the wheelhouse /cabin and replace with a new cabin resembling the one on the Orca from the film Jaws, put on a forward walkway with a few drums used as floats, and you have a completely different boat. I dont know what size your hull is, but from the pic it looks like the hull would be suitable for the conversion, it wont be exact, but as long as your happy with it thats all that matters.

Hi Bosun,

what a great idea! I've had a look on the net to see what the 'orca' was like and it is very much something I was looking for.
The hull's shape is not really fitting, but I might go for 'Orca II' which may look similar, but not exact like the 'Orca'. :-))

Not bad either. But I am not too much into military stuff.
I think those shark and whale fishing boats look rotten and misused enough for me. I think I'll have a go in that direction.

The fact that the underwater shape is different doesn't really matter.  In reality, it is likely that the "real" boat would have been bought as a hull, probably second-hand, and modified by the new owner who would have been looking for a size rather than a particular hull-form.  The important thing is that it should look like it could have been, and it should look like all the bits could work if it was real.
Can't remember the name of the boat, but there was a cruise launch in the movie "Cocoon" that might suit the hull.

How about the shrimp boat, Jenny  from the film Forest Gump. I saw it at downtown Disney last year, it is being restored along side the Planet Hollywood restaurant

Lots of great ideas are coming in here.
Even if I have decided to go for the Orca - keep them coming.
I am sure there are a lot more creative ideas here, that would help other newbies with boring boats along. :-))
