Hull prep for painting question.
« on: October 26, 2009, 08:40:36 am »

My scratch-built, one metre hull, epoxy and cloth over balsa planking is now ready for painting. After applying a sand-coat of epoxy I have now rubbed it down with 180 wet & dry.
I have, following Stavos' thread got spirit wipe but am just wondering about this.

Is it necessary or advisable to use a 'plastic' etch-primer before spray putty, primer and finish coats?

Thanks.

Hi Bugsy,

Not sure what you mean by 'etch' primer- etch primer is only for metals, not for plastics.

However as a base coat you will need to use a plastic primer- most, me included, use the Halford's ones- they do a Red Oxide plastic primer which can be used as a good antifouling representation and the grey plastic primer can be used as a base for all other colours.

Hi Greg,
This is the stuff I'm on about.

Its a, clear, thin etch coating for automotive plastic.

Hi,

If you can get the paint from the same manufacturer then you should be ok- it should state what plastics it can be used on on the back of the can.
